Huey Morgan celebrates 30 years of Fun Lovin’ Criminals

Thirty years ago, while Britpop was getting busy patting itself on the back in the mirror, Huey Morgan and the Fun Lovin’ Criminals blasted through the door from New York, took the furniture, and walked out the door with the stereo.

Now Morgan is returning for the record that started it all.

In celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of Come Find Yourself, Morgan is touring the UK in October with an all-new band, and 14 shows that will take you back to the bruised, beautiful, sharp-tongued marriage of rock, funk, blues, soul, rap, jazz and Latin music contained in that seminal album.

It was music that refused to just stay on the sidelines. It sounded like New York at 3am: cinematic, gritty, seductive, and just dangerous enough to make your parents want to know exactly what it is you’re up to out there.

And then there was “Scooby Snacks.”

With its use of dialogue sampled from Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, it was less a single than a cultural hit squad, and the track became a cult classic and ensured that Come Find Yourself spent nearly two years in the UK charts. Not bad for a band fronted by a man who used to collect glasses in Manhattan’s iconic Limelight nightclub.

Morgan and the Criminals went from there to world tours, opening for U2, a rowdy appearance at the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in 1999 and collaborations with the legendary B.B. King.

That would probably be called a career by some people.

Morgan calls it Tuesday.

The songs still bite. The bass still knows where the bodies are buried. The stories still have that feeling of someone who has seen enough of life to realize the world is pretty silly.

And Morgan’s voice? Unmistakable.

Off the stage, Morgan has become one of the best-known commentators and broadcasters in Britain, with an encyclopedic knowledge of music and film that he has applied on radio and television. He currently hosts weekends on Virgin Radio.

But this October, the microphone gets to go back where it belongs.

Back onstage.

Over 14 dates, Huey Morgan will bring the album that gave him a career back to the stage with a brand new band, bringing back the cockiness, grooves, menace and storytelling that made this album a defining debut — minus the pretense that the 90s weren’t as bad as they actually were.

Thirty years later, the record hasn’t aged.

It’s everyone else that has.

The Fun Lovin’ Criminal wasn’t merely the name of a platinum ’90s hit. It was a warning label.

The King of New York is back. And don’t think about trying to imitate him.
