7/10
Deep from the deepest darkest depths of Catalonia, we present to you the debut LP for Cerebral Curse, “Abominant Incarnations of Sepulchral Depths”. We’ve seen some sadistic cavernous extreme metal coming from Iberian peninsula in recent weeks, at the time of writing. First Profanation, then Sepulcre, now Cerebral Curse!
On the surface, there’s little to analyse with only 3 songs in total. Though don’t be fooled, as each sails way north of the 10 minute mark, creating the illusion of continuous free-flowing opus. Well, free-flowing may be the wrong word. The songs do flow, but flowing more like lava. Slow, corrosive, and engulfing everyone and everything in its path in its brutal all consuming funeral death-doom form! Thing Bell Witch, or Ahab, though with a much darker and grittier sharpened edge where no light can possibly escape from its murky depths. Whether it’s the caustic guitar tones or fierce guttural vocals, there’s something primitive and simple yet fiercely devastating about the sound of Cerebral Curse.
So for all this praise, why only a 7 out of 10? Simply, production! In some ways, it feels raw and gritty, offering that dirty low end and retrograde flavour the genre needs. In other ways, it feels too dirty and gritty, and frankly a bit amateur at times. Though we saw a similar transformation with Profanation; a rough and ready debut EP and a gruesome finished end product in the form of their latest full length. I’m sure this will be the same thing for Cerebral Curse; they’ve more than set themselves up for success in the funeral doom world. All the raw talent and ingredients are there. They just need time to marinade and cook. When the time does come, we just know their future records will be certified monsters! If they can get the production right.
