EMQ’s With Lieder Distortion

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Swedish Symphonic Opera Rock project, Lieder Distortion. Huge thanks to them for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Our name is Lieder Distortion, I sing and arrange together with the producers and the instrumentalists.

We play Symphonic Opera Rock, but unlike other bands in the genre, we play real opera arias and classical songs by Mozart, Vivaldi, Schubert, etc. The idea came when I was studying at the Academy of Opera and at the same time playing in different bands. There are elements in this music that would be perfect for an “Art Rock” project. It became Lieder Distortion.

How did you come up with your band name?

Classical songs are usually called ‘lieder’ in Swedish and German. Distorted ones simply: Lieder Distortion. Then we twisted the name in a way or took inspiration from a local band called Alien Distortion.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

The recording project: Sweden, Italy.

I live in Sweden and there are any number of good bands. I’m not really the right person to ask about the metal genre because I mostly freelance in other music genres. Musical theatre, entertainment etc.

What is your latest release?

‘Se il cor guerriero’ was our first single, released in January. The next single release will be March 24th.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Tarja Turunen, she was the first I heard in the genre.

What first got you into music?

When I saw the combination of medium length hair and electric guitar.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Myrkur.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Sweden Rock, because then we can travel with electricity, biogas or something else. Flying is not an option until there is a more climate-smart fuel.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Nothing strange, just nice things.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

We live on earth and everyone will die one day. Regardless of what happens after, one should follow one’s heart and worry less about what others will think. We also only have one planet so taking care of it, cleaning up humanity’s mess and shaping our way of living within the planet’s boundaries is more important than any world tour.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Of course, Elvis Presley.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Actually entertaining people. That you can achieve a break and a meeting place in joy. The worst thing about being a musician/singer is when people around you get sick. Or being sick and not being able to perform as well as you want.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Less bland music.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Broder Daniel Forever”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Cassettes! That’s the coolest one!

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I have a really hard time choosing, I play quite a lot as a freelance musician otherwise and I think all gigs are special. Can’t pick a favorite.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Green wave downshifting farmer, although I am already partially…  Or a hypnotist?

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Henrik Berggren, Jarvis Cocker, Myrkur, Per Gessle, Joan Jett.

What’s next for the band?

Our next single will be released March 24th. It’s a very famous classical song.

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

Tea Cake? Tekaka in Swedish.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

British things we love: scones, Henry Purcell, britpop, Monthy Python, The Young Ones and all your brilliant humor and music.
