EMQ’s With Long Pockets
EMQ’s With Long Pockets
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with UK based Hard Rock band, Long Pockets. Huge thanks to their Bass/ Rhythm guitarist, “Jesus” Jon Hughes, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
“Jesus” Jon Hughes. I play bass guitar, rhythm guitar and sing a little. I bumped into an old school prefect who’d made it big. We joined up about 7 years ago, dabbling in this, that, and the other and then ended up recording some great sounds. Honestly, it’s a privilege to play with these guys and very humbling that they have chosen a couple of tracks I have written to take to the full band line-up.
How did you come up with your band name?
Rob Reid, our singer, came up with the name. You’d have to ask him.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
UK and happening!
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
‘3am’ is a song about nocturnal anxieties, which may seem manageable in daylight hours, but take on monstrous proportions at night.
It is one of 5 songs to be released on our EP in September. The other songs are:
‘3am (full version)’
‘Hit Bottom’
‘MuthaFunka’
‘Need a lotta Lovin (Sweet Cover)’
Who have been your greatest influences?
Too many to name, especially across all the band. We all share a love of music from all genres. Big guitar riffs, powerhouse rhythm sections, and soulful vocals. Led Zepellin, Montrose, Deep Purple, Government Mule, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, and The Faces to name a few.
What first got you into music?
Me personally? My sister’s boyfriend left an acoustic guitar at our house along with a Michael Moorcock book in 1982 and I just started playing. The more I played the more I loved music.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
The band I’m in. Tony, Ian, and Rob, love these guys. They are all so down to earth, no egos, no nothing, except the sheer enjoyment of playing music together. Honestly we walk out of rehearsals feeling like we’re 16 again.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
The obvious answer is Glastonbury, but there’s others out there worldwide like Burning Man in Nevada and the Montreux Jazz Festival (Deep Purple headlined 8 times there!). They’d be at the top of the list for sure.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
A printed pyjama set with my face on it!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
No more pyjamas!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Prince.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love being able to pick up a guitar and riff. Not knowing any songs but being able to play improv forever! Hate losing the muse… She can be fickle sometimes.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
The fact that marketing wins above the music. There are some amazing sounds out there that don’t see the light of day, because they have ineffective marketeers. We’re lucky to have Davide from The Metallist.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Starless and Bible Black” – King Crimson.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Vinyl every time.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
My first ever gig at The Garage basement, Notts back in 1985! 10 Quid Sid on sound, big punk venue.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
My other stuff. Music, Film, A/V, charity work.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Stephen Fry (of course), Frank Zappa, The Big Yin, My friends Richard Bell and Mick Reed.
What’s next for the band?
Releasing the EP and work on the huge catalogue of creativity we have waiting in the wings.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
Where I’m from, it’s a cob. So I walk into a chippy and it’s a chip cob. In Preston it’s a barm cake or barm. Down south it’s a roll or bap.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Yup, please listen to ‘3am’ and those that are interested, please contact us at LongPockets069@gmail.com for the full exclusive extended version. Also visit us at Spotify, where you can get a time limited sneak preview of our next single ‘Hit Bottom’.
