EMQ’s With Enquire Within

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with UK based Metal band, Enquire Within. Huge thanks to them for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hey, we are Enquire Within, a metal band from London. We have five members: Jacob (Lead Vocals), Henry (Drums), Dan (Guitar and Backing Vocals), Amelia (Guitar) & Erim (Bass). The band started as a fun school project for Dan and Henry before they decided to try and go somewhere with it. They asked Henry’s brother Jacob to do some vocals on their early demos and that started Enquire Within. We’ve picked up members, lost some members and ended up with the lineup you see today.

How did you come up with your band name?

We saw it on an advert! Jacob, Dan and Henry had been talking about what to call the project for ages. Never settling on a good name. We passed a sign one day while chatting about it that ended with the words “Enquire Within”. We decided that will do for now! It wasn’t until we heard crowds cheer at our name in our Kent Metal to the Masses that we realised we might have been onto a winner.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are all based around the London Scene. In all honesty metal is thriving here. If you don’t believe us, come down to the London Metal Coalition festival in September!

What is your latest release?

Our latest release is our single ‘Final Seal’. It came out on the 30th of June and can be found on all good music platforms. We also have a video out which you can find on YouTube.

Who have been your greatest influences?

This answer changes depending on who you ask. For Dan, he is very much influenced by A7X and in some ways, Muse. Jacob, the early 2000s “New Wave of American Heavy Metal” (Lamb of God, Trivium, DevilDriver to name a few). Henry has a similar taste to Jacob (they are brothers) but still manages to make it his own. Erim is the odd one out as he is influenced more by 90s prog. Then we have Amelia who is our Black and Extreme metal fanatic.

What first got you into music?

For our lead vocalist Jacob (and probably our drummer Henry) it would have to be his father. He was raised on “Dad Rock” AC/DC, Hawkwind and Motorhead and from there his tastes grew and varied into the weird mish mash it is today.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

There are too many to name! We talk about this a lot. The one that probably comes up the most however is Devin Townsend, doing anything with him would be the highest honour.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

When we have band meetings the names Bloodstock and Hellfest do get thrown around a lot!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

It was respectfully turned down (as we had nowhere to put it) but Jacob distinctly remembers someone once offering him a Welsh horse skull, dressed as Mari Lwyd (Welsh Christmas tradition).

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

BUY OUR MERCH! Jokes aside, our fans humble us. The very fact they have decided to enjoy what we create is the best gift that can be given. So our message would be a loud and resounding THANK YOU! You make us what we are.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

For our drummer Henry it would most definitely be Joey Jordison. The ex drummer of Slipknot. He was a major influence on him picking up the sticks and when he passed away he was heartbroken.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

What do we enjoy the most? Travelling across the country to places we would never have been before and meeting all sorts of wonderful people. The only downside? No free time! (but is it really work if you love doing it?).

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

A. Now that is a VERY loaded question (you keep doing these!), again it would depend on who you ask. The music industry is a wonderful thing and there are some amazing people in it. But we all have the things we would want to improve.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

You keep asking very difficult questions. For us however Trivium’s “The Sin and the Sentence” is definitely one with the most impact in recent years, and a constant source of in-jokes.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Probably vinyl, we have discovered unique parts of performances on vinyl that you can’t pick up on other media. We are definitely going to try to release our next EP on vinyl if we can.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Sheffield 02 Main Stage. 2022. Absolutely phenomenal. The crowd was insane.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I am fairly certain Henry would be in prison.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

There are five members in this band. If it’s a free dinner I think all five of us would invite ourselves, thank you.

What’s next for the band?

We have two shows coming in the next few months. A headline show at the Black Heart in Camden on the 28th of July and a slot on the London Metal Coalition “Coalition Fest” coming up a few weeks after that. Then…well we have just released a new single… maybe there is more where that came from?

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

We are all Londoners here so bread roll is the way for us (Amelia is french but Baguette was not listed so she doesn’t count).

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Check out our latest single ‘Final Seal’. If you like what you hear, come down to the Black Heart in Camden on July 28th for our next show!
