EMQ’s With Negative Frame

Hi everyone. Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with UK Hardcore band, Negative Frame. Huge thanks to their Guitarist, Olly, For taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hey it’s Olly here, the guitarist of Negative Frame. We formed in 2017 through skating while in college. We’d see dozens of hunched over, suit dressed commuters every day on the tube lacking a passion for life. We formed the band to escape the bitterness of teenage day jobs, with practice and a local show being the absolute highlight of our week, and it still is. After launching our debut EP at a show with Discharge, grinding DIY UK tours and shows every weekend, we suddenly realised that every show was packed out with violent moshers. Last year we joined forces with Avocado Booking – working closely with Matt from Funeral For A Friend.

How did you come up with your band name?
Negative Frame was born in the Bible. Jesus’ body was left in a tomb and suddenly disappeared leaving only a blood stained cloth. When looking at this blood stained cloth through a negative frame lens – Jesus’ face appears. This relates to our lyrics as everything relates to your own perspective and individual interpretations.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We’re a part of the thriving UK Hardcore scene and are based in London. Fists are swung and people throw themselves off the stage. We love violent moshing, it’s such an aggressive form of expression in the right place. The community is insane, artists, bands, promoters, labels… The UK scene is thriving and we’re gassed to be a part of it. Shout out Splitknuckle, Despize, No Relief, Body Bag.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
We recently dropped “The Mercy Killing” EP – 5 tracks of dance metal mayhem. We mix hard groove riffs with violent breakdowns and fast death metal/thrash chaos. We mix our favourite parts of heavy music with an added bounce and passionate atmosphere. It’s available on 12” vinyl thanks to The Coming Strife Records UK – and on CD from Death Farm Records EU.

Who have been your greatest influences?
We formed this band off our love for Burn The Priest, Acid Bath, Disembodied, Morbid Angel and Malevolence.

What first got you into music?
Sitting in front of MTV at the age of 4 years old, I saw KISS blasting their guitars right in my face and it was insane. I started playing guitar when I was 7 and shortly bought Guitar Hero after this. I instantly fell for fucking Slayer which paved the way to all things heavy.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Keep it Real or Drain.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
We’ve always wanted to play Bloodstock, let’s just say we’re working on it!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Riley Gale. Power trip. RIP.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Playing different countries and festivals is a huge highlight if playing in the band. There’s good and bad to everything, we do what we have to. We’ve been stranded across the country via coaches breaking down, bunking trains, sleeping on the airport floor… it’s all part of the madness and we always have a laugh about it… the next day.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Reign in Blood” – Slayer.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?
Cassettes are an awesome and iconic piece of diy hardcore/punk. We love them! We have a limited Halloween run being printed for our Portugal/Spain tour. Vinyl is also sick, as the art pieces are visible on a larger scale. “The Mercy Killing” EP is available on 12” vinyl with our last EP, “Small World” on the B-side. Thanks to The Coming Strife Records.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
We played with Thy Art Is Murder sold out at The Dome which was our biggest show to date. However, we always wanted to play The Underworld. We rocked it last July with Kublai Khan which was our best reaction ever. People were crowd surfing, grabbing the mic and everyone knew our songs.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Thanks to my obsession with Jackass, I’d probably be fucking up my body as a stunt man.

What’s next for the band?
We’re stoked to be coming back to Portugal and Spain this Halloween for 4 shows of madness. We have our biggest tour to date dropping for next year and will be playing festivals across Europe. We’re starting to write our debut LP which will be a big deal.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll, or a Tea Cake?
I’ve never heard of half of these terms. If it’s round I’d go for a bagel or a bun.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks for having us, check out “The Mercy Killing” EP across platforms now! Stay well and keep rocking
