EMQ’s With The Lunar Effect
12/02/2024

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with British Hard Rock / Doom band The Lunar Effect. Huge thanks to their guitarist / pianist, Jon, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

I’m Jon and I play guitar and sometimes piano in The Lunar Effect.

How did you come up with your band name?

The band name happened organically, but the idea of it came from a fascination with the  power of the moon.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from London, England, the scene is pretty small, but has a very loyal fanbase. So even if the venues aren’t the biggest they are always full of people who like that kind of music.

What is your latest release?

Our latest release is ‘Pulling Daisies’, which is the first single from our new album “Sounds of Green & Blue” which will be released on Svart Records in April this year.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Too many to think of all at once, but I think we would all agree on David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and The Beatles.

What first got you into music?

Listening to my Dad’s record collection when I was a kid.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Jack White. The man is a genius when it comes to coming up with new ideas and branding.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

There are too many to choose from, we would love to play some of the European Festivals though. I suppose in England, maybe Glastonbury if we are talking about a mega festival.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Ah I cannot tell you, that I’m afraid as it would violate the sacred bond that is fan and band confidentiality.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Buy our record, and thank you for the support.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

John Lennon.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Writing songs is what I enjoy the most and what I hate the most is musicians who play over you when you are talking or showing them something.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

The fact that most genres and scenes are an exclusive club and sometimes the best bands go without recognition because they don’t know the right people within those inner circles.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Like Clockwork” by Queens of The Stone Age.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl. It’s better for the bigger artwork alone. Plus it sounds warmer.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The Garage in London. We played there last summer and it was incredible.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I honestly have no idea, this is all I have ever known.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

I don’t really like strangers so it would always be the rest of the band and my invisible friend Mr. Nobody for when their conversation starts to lag.

What’s next for the band?

We have our album release party in April and then we will be playing all the UK to promote the record and hopefully coming to Europe as well.

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

We use Spotify mainly. We get far more listeners on there than on any other social media. We do have others but they don’t get the same interaction from our fans that Spotify does.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

It’s a Roll in London.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Not really, thank you for the time.  Oh and don’t forget to buy the record.
