Lauren Babic isn’t a name that I’ve come across before, but according to the press release, she’s famous for doing Metal covers of Pop songs, and has millions of followers, and 100’s of millions of views of these videos! She’s also in 3 bands, Red Handed Denial, CrazyEightyEight, and SKYLIMIT… I’m still none the wiser. Maybe it’s because I’m old, and largely ignore social media, and popular culture. But, having listened to this first Solo EP from Lauren, I’m intending on curing my ignorance now!
Starting with ‘Sanctuary’ Lauren introduces us to her brand of Melodic Metalcore, which marries spiky guitars with muddy low bass, and cinematic atmospherics, and puts them under her voice, which, in the verses is delicate and pure, with a mainstream chart edge. This sweet sound lulls you into a false sense of security though, as we get a burst of what she’s really capable of with a small section of full-on Metalcore growls, which are epic!
‘Breathe You In’ is next, and this starts off very mainstream, with rhythms that wouldn’t be out of place in a Dance club, along with the same gentle vocals. They’ve got a touch of Christina Aguilera about them, but with more grit, and more power for the chorus. A little Alannis Morissette maybe. But there’s still that distinct Metalcore edge, with a heavy, down-tuned bass line, and Djent guitars.
The Penultimate track, ‘I’m Bored’, completely flips what we’ve heard in the previous two tracks on its head! From the gentle sweet vocals, with only a hint of what lies beneath, we now get full-on unashamed screamo (complete with a comedic cough in the middle, which absolutely made me howl!) and rhythms that make this into an absolute banger of a Metalcore track that would have ferocious pits erupting all over the place in a live setting. Wow! The main message of this song is as the title suggests, which also made me chuckle.
‘Let it Die’ closes the EP. And it again goes to the heavier end, but moves into more Progressive Metal territory that moves through sections of screams and growls, and cleans. Again it’s another top-end tune, that’s got a huge, expansive feel to it, and really highlights the diverse talents of Lauren in both singing and songwriting.
This is a really pleasing little EP! Don’t be deceived by the sweetness at first – there’s a Metalcore beast living within, that’s coming out to get you.
