Hailing from Saxony, Germany, death metal duo Slaughterday entered the studio for the 6th time and the result is their effort “Dread Emperor”.
Slaughterday constantly shift between different modes of extreme metal and thus move the point of attack. You can find yourself headbanging along to slower sludgy passages, with soaring leads in the style of Carcass with fear inducing tones acting as a warning sign for the avalanche that is coming! And when it does, you know about. You feel powerless as the double kick drums show their presence, the guitars get low and heavy with the pace quickening, and you get caught in the subsequent whirlwind! ‘The Forsaken Ones’ provides one of the greater examples of this pattern, reminiscent of Bolt Thrower and their ability to mix dynamics so effectively.
The vocals are consistently strong, whether it’s the densely textured growls or the sparingly used but equally impressive higher pitch shrieks. It’s not all cookie monster gargling either as there is an element of diction and enunciation that ensures there’s clarity.
Speaking of clarity, the production is sharp and clear throughout, allowing you to feel the rumble of the bass and to marvel at intricacies of the dual guitar passages, the best example of the latter coming during ‘Necrocide’. Yet they’re hiding nothing under the blanket of studio magic and the result is a very believable and convincing end product.
How does this compare to the rest of the genre ? What are they offering that’s unique ? Sadly a question I can’t really answer. It’s a tough marketplace and a fiercely stacked scene. This feels like a respectable throwback to the glory days of the genre with solid modern production values. Many other bands have offered this though. Consequently, “Dread Emperor” may well get lost in the shuffle.
