The USA-based band Combichrist has been around since the early 2000’s, performing Harsh Industrial/NDH/Industrial Metal music, orchestrated by the Norway born Andy LaPlegua, the master mind behind the effective drum programming and Dark Electro Harsh synths, establishing Combichrist as one of the most influential bands of the contemporary Harsh Industrial musical assault.
In “Only Here For A Good Time” (EP), released on 21 of May, Combichrist packed four songs which were previously released as singles and added a brand new song to the mix – ‘Only Here for a Good Time’ – as a warm up for the band’s full length upcoming album – “The Venom in the Mouth of God” – to be released in 24th of July, via Out of Line Music.
First, I think that Combichrist nailed it by choosing to release singles in one year, providing the band with proper flow to keep their songs relevant in the strange world of Spotify’s algorithms. I mean, nowadays it seems to me like releasing a whole album with 12 songs is a true waste of good music.
Now, from the reviewer’s perspective, I must say that I felt frustrated with the fact that songs released as singles aren’t worth a full review. Suddenly, Combichrist finally allowed me to write about my impressions of the songs previously released as a single format.
So, let’s look at each of the songs, from the beginning to the end of the song collection presented in “Only Here For A Good Time”. ‘Desolation’ has an Electro Gothic aura, and the drum programming brings to the mix an EBM pace that made me wanna dance (in my case, ‘dancing’ means stomping one of my feet to the ground, basically. Yeah, I can’t shake my hips at all. ‘RISE’ is a piece of NHD perfection enhanced by a heavy guitar-like wall of sound. Harsh/Industrial song patterns successfully updated. ‘Feraline’ has an up-tempo drum and bass which sounded to me like an Electro Martial Beats in the middle of another EBM Teutonic flow, which was a great source of dopamine to my brain.
‘Demons Wanna Be Summoned’ is one of the best songs that I have heard this year! On this one, my body didn’t feel like hitting the dance floor; instead, that song brought to my mind shoegaze 80’s and 90’s vibe – the band which come to my mind was ‘Enjoy the Silence’, by Depeche Mode. Maybe.
I said on the previous paragraph that ‘Demons Wanna Be Summoned’ was one of the best songs of 2026 to me, because ‘Only Here for a Good Time’ is the number one song of this year, so far. Rammstein-like heavy guitar layers open landscape to an incursion into the 90’s NHD austere electronic elementals whose pace reminded of Oomph! songs.
Combichrist’s option to release the latest songs in small parts and then pack all of them in an EP, which is 23 minutes long, including a new song in the mix, gave me a refreshing preview of what is to come in the full-length album “The Venom in the Mouth of God”, which includes eight new songs to listen to. Small pills keep me searching for a never-ending drug-free dopamine music content.
