Life has, yet again, been throwing more shit at my family and me than anyone should have to endure, so I’ve been chasing my tail for months and not managing to squeeze in listening to or reviewing new music. But I was determined that the new offering from my favourite, Devin Townsend, would get a review from me. I knew it was going to be spectacular, but I was not prepared for just how spectacular.

Certain seminal works from history define their composers – Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Holst’s The Planets, to name a few. They are all works that I remember where I was the first time I heard them, and they still do things to me that nothing else can. They never get old. They soothe, despite their grandeur and heaviness, both musically and thematically. For me, this new offering from the modern master of composition has a place on this list, up there with the best in musical history. I want to break down why, and I shall try, as eloquently as I know how, I feel my words won’t do it justice, and you should just listen to it, then you’ll understand.

“The Moth” is the culmination of a decade of intensity for Devin. His dream was always to write an Orchestral work, but doing so required one hell of an upskill. He needed to be able to get the sounds he’d been hearing in his head for years onto a page that could be translated by classically trained musicians in order to realise his vision. And because Devin is Devin, that’s exactly what he did. His child-like, innocent belief that he can be whatever he wants to be never fails.

And so here we are, confronted with something that is more than just an album. It’s a full experience that consumes your soul. If you’re looking for a gateway album into progressive metal, this is not it. It demands your attention and confuses your mind. But if you’re a seasoned prog follower, you will not be able to reach the end of this album without feeling like you’ve been on a magnificent journey, and your jet-lagged body will need a rest. And that is, indeed, the theme of the album – metamorphosis. The album’s name draws out this metaphor, with Devin citing the process a moth goes through to become a moth as symbolic of the journey through life, traveling half-asleep, until you wake up. At over an hour in length (or 2 hours 20 minutes if you listen to the deluxe edition, which has a second CD with remixed versions), just its timestamp is ballsy enough. But that hour melts into insignificance when you become entangled in the music and storytelling.

So, what do we have on offer musically? Well, it’s pure Devin, just even grander. Yep, when we thought he’d reached a peak of grandness he could never top, we were wrong. It’s that Plovdiv open-air concert times a million. It’s “Empath” on some serious hardcore drugs. It’s magical and monumental, showing a deep understanding of dynamics, motifs, and other clever musical tactics that I will not profess to understand, as I am not worthy.

Opening with ‘Semi-prologue,’ it becomes instantly obvious that this album is going to be as involved as it gets. The track is gentle, but grand. Peaceful, but foreboding. It is masterfully orchestrated to explore the orchestral sounds and the gravitas of silence within music.

‘War Beyond Words’ takes us to a new place, with classic Devin heaviness woven into its core, but still maintains this new musicianship that’s taken a decade to form. And this is really how the album continues. It’s like watching a Hollywood blockbuster that only you can see inside your head.

Every single musician here has poured their heart and soul into this offering, and it has created something phenomenal. And that is really all I can say about it. I’m not going to reduce it to a track-by-track dissection, because I simply can’t. It’s just a very special piece of work that’s firmly rooted in classical and operatic music, but with the modern edge of music as we know it today. You need to listen to it on many levels and digest it time and time again. I don’t think I’ll ever stop hearing new things in it. There is no scale against which this could ever be judged sufficiently. The scale is insignificant, as am I and my opinions, in comparison to the masterpiece that is “The Moth”. Devin, you beautiful human, you’ve done it again.
