EMQ’s with MONTE LUNA
EMQ’s with MONTE LUNA
Hi Everyone. Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Austin, Texas based Sludge band Monte Luna! Huge thanks to them for taking part!
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is James, I sing, play guitar and bass for the band. We formed in 2015 as a two-piece destruction unit and have been laying waste to the great country of the United States since. When we come through your town we promise you won’t forget us after we leave. Your eyes are dazed and heavy.
How did you come up with your band name?
It is a title of a Jimmy Spheris song. Bet you didn’t expect that did you?
What country are you from and what is the Rock/Metal scene like there?
The United States! Austin Texas, the Texas metal scene is one of the best music scenes this fine country has to offer. We are damn proud to be a part of this Texas Metal Scene.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Monte Luna – “Drowners’ Wives”! Vinyl link attached!

Who have been your greatest influences?
King Buzzo from the Melvins, Black Flag, George Harrison, Black Sabbath and Rob Crow!
What first got you into music?
Being really sad and angry as a young man!
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Neurosis – it would be more of a tutoring class with us featured haha. They are such phenomenal musicians and it would be a life-long dream achievement to play with them in any capacity.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Hellfest, because the Melvins 2011 performance inspired me to be the musician I am and I want the world to know we will swing for the fences every time no matter what and crush it.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
A ceramic owl, she was really cool about it though so I was happy to take it! San Antonio girls rule.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Follow your dreams and do it yourself. No one will do it for you.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
No-one, I’m glad they died. That’s just part of life, people die and that was it. I don’t think anyone is important enough to wish them from the dead no matter how much I wanted it. Life is chaos, get used to it.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love the life; I hate coming home from tour and getting back to normal life. Normal life sucks…do drugs, play music and die.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I would change how the funds are distributed. Musicians deserve a stable and sustainable future, and that starts with paying people fair wages. This 5 dollar cover standard is pretty gross too. People act like it’s a huge deal to pay more than that, I get it we are all broke, but I know y’all spending way more on drugs.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“All Things Must Pass” by George Harrison! Beautiful album start to finish, it has brought me to tears on more than one occasion.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Downloads – I just don’t have time to sit down with much else these days.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Monte Luna/ Serial Hawk/ Order of the Owl/ Savegist! So much fun in Atlanta at 529 and such a beautiful night with good friends old and new, it’s one of those “this is why i do it” moments. You can taste the talent it was so thick.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Idk!? I think I’d sell shoes? No no…The other things I do right now but more frequently – making movies, dungeon mastering for D&D and bartending.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Danny McBride, The Jerkbeast, A Beholder, my friend Andrea and Liz Buckingham! We would lace our food with Psilocybe cubensis and then play Dungeons and Dragons. Hopefully on the back of a giant turtle while we sailed through space! Where is your God now?
What’s next for the band?
Work; work; work! Write more music; play more shows, party more, pirate the world.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

But we are also on Spotify, it’s all the rage.

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?
Biscuit, but I’m not big on sweets so I really don’t care. I would much rather play devil’s advocate.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
