EMQ’s with FOX MEDICINE
Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Portland, Oregon based Bubblegum Doom band, Fox Medicine. Huge thanks to lead vocalist/guitarist, Neezy Dynamite, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Neezy Dynamite, I play guitar and sing in FOX MEDICINE. We are a two piece (drums +guitar (although sometimes bass) and we have been playing our strange brand of grungy metal aka Bubblegum Doom since 2016 when we first started the band. We have two studio albums and a bunch of ‘D.I.Y. E.P’s. Everything changed when we met Toshi Kasai and started making dope studio albums with him!
How did you come up with your band name?
It came to me in a dream. I looked it up and found out that in Native American folklore it is believed that each animal has a message for you, or that you yourself possess certain qualities of that animal. I think we are all deeply connected to nature and each other, more than we realize.
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We live in Portland, OR. There are some cool heavy bands here and people love going to doom shows, I mean back when that was normal.
Our friends Moon Priest from Portland and The Kronk Men from Bend, OR are choice local recommendations!
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
We just released our second studio album “BLUE BUBBLEGUM” on 21st May 2021! Video for ‘Billy The Beetle’ coming very soon! Listen to the audio below!
‘Billy The Beetle’ (Audio)
Who have been your greatest influences?
Probably all the bands that got me through high-school. TOOL, Melvins, Slayer, Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground, Babes in Toyland, Ministry, Deftones, Atari Teenage Riot, etc.
What first got you into music?
I made little sing songs on the guitar when I was a kid and then when I was 9, I saw Nirvana with my cousin. Melvins opened. It changed me forever.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?
Desert Sessions!!! That would be awesome.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Festivals scare me, but I’d play the Twin Peaks festival…we’re weird enough, i think!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Nothing too weird, all very cool!!! Shrooms, T-shirts, Dolls, Tapes, hair accessories…I love them all.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Dont take anything too seriously and be as weird as you want!!!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Lou Reed.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love it when we whip the crowd into a frenzy…hate? Loading out probably…heavy gear ugh.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
That it stops pushing music that insults people’s intelligence.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Ozma” by Melvins.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
I personally like Vinyl the best, but it takes up so much space and is heavy to lug around on tour. Downloads seem to be the most affordable for everyone.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
So many…but my favourite was in Toronto, a show I did for my friend Peter from the band Belladonnakillz after he died. All his musician friends put together a show to remember him and it was just so emotionally charged and all around beautiful vibes I will never forget it.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Are you kidding me? You have to do other things when you’re a musician. Gear is expensive, recording is expensive hahaha. I am an Operating Room Nurse on the side.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Noel Fielding, King Buzzo, Toshi Kasai (the dude is funny and has awesome stories) Kate Bush, and David Lynch.
What’s next for the band?
Try to tour if we can? What is this world? Are the people winning? Are there Aliens? Are we the Aliens? I’m here for it. I wanna write the next album and play shows and hang out with everyone again and dance/mosh to my friend’s bands. I want that whole vibe again, but hopefully better, with more appreciation.

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?
I dont care what they identify as, they are super delicious. I always have them when I’m in Europe.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
My pleasure. Yes. Trust no one and question everything!
