EMQ’s With Dawn Turbo

Hi Everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Brazilian Industrial project, Dawn Turbo. Huge thanks to main man Julian Barg for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Julian Barg. I sing, play guitar, bass, piano, keyboards and program electronics. Dawn Turbo was “born” with the necessity of turning the uncomfortable feelings and the suffering of psychiatric conditions into sounds and music. After quite a long time working to achieve this sound, in 2018 the band – or project – debuted with the EP ‘Bright’.

How did you come up with your band name?

Dawn Turbo is a two-sword name, it could represent an atomic bomb and total destruction, but also a new beginning and a rebirth.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

Curitiba in Brazil. The metal / rock scene is pretty much underground. But as it has always been, it continues to give signs that it is immortal.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

“Stop” (EP).

Who have been your greatest influences?

Electronic Music, particularly IDM and Industrial in general.

What first got you into music?

I started studying classical piano at age 5.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

Deftones.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

I’m not super familiar with the details of each festival, but big festivals in Britain and Europe would be my choice.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

A huge white toy rabbit.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

My music is not made to be happy, “enjoyable” in the way people usually like music (to sing along). It is meant to reflect what people with psychiatric conditions feel like or go through.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Prince.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love how I can express feelings. I hate that it is so marginalized.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Right now, that streaming platforms payed musicians what they deserve.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Sheer Heart Attack” (Queen).

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?

CDs.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

6,000 people a few years back.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Teaching Literature… oh wait, I AM doing that.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

The Beatles + George Martin.

What’s next for the band?

An EP of remixes of our latest release, “Stop”.

What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Instagram, Beacons.

Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?

Whatever you want it to be.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks for the opportunity to be here and show my music to you.
