“Drif” starts off very characteristically with ‘Asja’ which serves as a strong initiation into my favourite track of the release ‘Anoana’ which also has a very cinematic accompanying video. This is then followed by the thirteen minute ‘Tenet’ which at times in very primal and visceral and others very foreboding. Unfortunately for me this section of the album is as good as it gets as I struggled with the short ‘Urbani’ and almost fully narrated ‘Keltentrauer’ very nearly had me turning the album off.
Fortunately, the saving grace with remnants of Dead Can Dance ‘Nesso’ has all the elements to remind me to what drew me to Heilung in the first place, but then immediately after I’m left with the sinking feeling that I’m experiencing with “Drif” as the final three tracks ‘Buslas Bann’, ‘Nikkal’ and closing track ‘Marduk’ unfortunately incorporate all the elements of the tracks I dislike.
Heilung are visually stunning and a true spectacle, and if this were a movie score it would be different story but unfortunately the majority of “Drif” does not quite translate.
