Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Swiss Stoner Rock band, Gentle Beast. Huge thanks to their vocalist, Timo, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
I’m Timo and Singer of the band Gentle Beast. My Brother and I wanted to have a band together in 2017, so we were looking around for some fellow rock musicians. We found them pretty fast and luckily, we have been able to play our first shows in the same year.
After playing a few shows for 2 Years we released a single as a 7” vinyl including our first music video ‘Hit the Spliff’.
In 2020 my brother and drummer of the band left Gentle Beast due to private stuff. A new drummer was found quickly.
During Covid we recorded our first full length album and played some shows when we were allowed to.
The first single of the album will be released this September!
How did you come up with your band name?
A friend at work calls me Gentle Giant, because I’m a tall kind person.
I told the rest of the not yet named band and they liked it. But I didn’t want a band name that’s actually me – plus, the band Gentle Giant already exists. So, we decided to change it to Gentle Beast. The band name is like we are. 5 very kind people who get wild and crazy on stage.
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We are all from the region of Basel, Switzerland. There are a lot of bands of all kinds of genres around here considering it’s such a small place. It is nice to be part of this “Basel-bubble”.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
11.10.2019 single ‘Hit the Spliff’/’Leeroy’, including music video ‘Hit the Spliff’.

Who have been your greatest influences?
Kyuss, 1000 Mods, Fu Manchu, Black Sabbath and many more
What first got you into music?
Since I was a little child I was fascinated by AC/DC. I love the power and dirt of their sound and how they implement their sound on stage. This is what I wanted to do. Awesome concerts that show who Gentle Beast is.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Stoned Jesus, Brant Bjork
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
I would love to play all Desertfest in one year to be able to listen to all the great bands I like.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
A pink girly shirt in S-size. It was from a fan of a support band. I wore it for the whole show.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Go and visit concerts at your local venues! They need your support now more than ever.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Kurt Kobain. He put all his feelings into the songs.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love to have the time and “adventures” with my band mates. They are like a family to me.
I don’t like to eat pasta at every gig. But some venues have more creative meals.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
More Appreciation for what musicians are doing.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Black Sabbath “Vol4”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?
At home Vinyl. For car driving I use streams.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
We had a show and my bachelor party at the same time at a motorcycle festival. Let’s say we were all very tired the next day.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I work also as a sound and light technician

Gentle Beast
What’s next for the band?
We will release in September the first single of the upcoming album.
In spring 2023 we release an LP on Vinyl and for streaming.
