EMQ’s With ELYN
EMQ’s With ELYN
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with London-based Alternative Metal band, Elyn. Huge thanks to Singer, Guitarist, and founder, Andy, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
I’m Andy and I’m both the singer and guitar player of Elyn. The band was created in 2019 after I came back from a gig in India that went wrong. A speaker tower collapsed 4 songs in, injured 10 people, and we were stormed by fans. After that experience, I realised that life is too precious and short to waste any opportunities, and I made it my mission to help people overcome their mental health issues through songs based on stoicism.
How did you come up with your band name?
It’s a funny yet dreadful story. The name is dedicated to a former band member of mine I shared with at the Indian gig I mentioned before. While everyone was scared and anxious after what happened, he seemed to be untouched by this event.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
Although we are all from different countries, we are based in London.
What is your latest release?
Our latest release is called “Regret” and can be listened to here:
Who have been your greatest influences?
Tool, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, Deftones and Alice In Chains to name a few.
What first got you into music?
During my second year of middle school in Italy, my music teacher at the time advised me to learn a musical instrument as I was doing well in music. So I started to take guitar lessons from an older friend and I immediately fell in love with the instrument.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Either Tool or Architects.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Download and Hellfest, because I’ve always enjoyed their vibes.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
An XXXL pair of female underwear.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
When you feel down don’t give up. Although life hits hard sometimes, there will always be a period of peace. Embrace discomfort and you’ll feel better.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
David Bowie. That man could do everything.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
What I love is the skill of expressing myself with sounds, which goes beyond what words can do on their own. However, I hate the fact that sometimes it all seems to be done for nothing,
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I would increase royalty payments from streaming services.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Lateralus” by Tool.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Vinyl has the best sound obviously, but downloads are more accessible and often the same quality as CD’s and Cassettes (although they lack the artwork).
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
A Sausage and Cider Festival in Derby.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Probably IT or an engineer.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Andrew WK, David Gilmour, David Goggins, Maynard James Keenan and Dr Andrew Huberman.
What’s next for the band?
We are going to release a new song in February, and we aim for a full album by the end of 2023.
What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Our official website is www.elynband.com where you can find all the links to our social media accounts and merch. our Instagram, Twitter and YouTube can be found by searching @elynband.
Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
Obviously, a bap. Love me a bacon bap.
