Up through the barren valley of the Portuguese mountains, Oak surfaces to deliver a singular dose of deepening despair and atmosphere with latest release “Disintegrate.” Vocalist and member of Extreme Metal aficionados Gaerea Guilherme Henriques takes inspiration from the writing side of the band’s 2018 album “Unsettling Whispers” and has applied it to the Doom / Death style for this album.

A serene start slowly weaves its way into the swirling combination of deepened growls and agony filled riffs. With the gradual changes in atmosphere and tempo throughout, Oak can convey the varying emotions of the story to “Disintegrate” – the burden and liberation of the Giant, and also lyrically “Suddenly, a giant could be heard walking slowly with the weight of the world on his back.”. This new narrative is about the liberation of the giant, which after the end of its cycle, will melt under the sun, while its soul leaves its body and floats, glimpsing the present and remembering the past in a few moments.

Oak comment: “Before managing to free himself from the unbearable weight carried on his back for an eternity, this giant knelt down and surrendered his own body to be consumed by the sun. Afterwards, there was only the cold that accompanied him on his passage to the immaterial world.” This excerpt is about that passage and also aims at a transition from sound to image, so that this moment becomes as visual as it is audible.”

Although It’s not uncommon in recent times to have something like this presented in a single form, it didn’t entirely capture my complete focus, but upon its release I believe it will be broken down into two parts, I would’ve liked to have heard it that way to see if it changed my listening experience or emotional attachment to this release.

An unsettling serving of sorrow.
