EMQ’s With Crown of Madness
EMQ’s With Crown of Madness
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Canadian Death Metal duo, Crown Of Madness. Huge thanks to their Guitarist and Vocalist, Sunshine, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Sunshine, I play guitar and sing the noises. I met my partner Connor (the drummer) on World of Warcraft in 2008 and then we started writing music together when we met in person in 2013. We went through a few phases, some different genres, and one tech death project. We settled on Crown of Madness during the pandemic in 2021.
How did you come up with your band name?
We opened ‘The Player’s Handbook’. It’s a Dungeons & Dragons spell.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We are from Vancouver, BC, Canada. Home to some of the best death metal bands on the planet. We are extremely lucky to be surrounded by these influential bands and musicians, it naturally pushes our creative boundaries and technical skills.
What is your latest release?
‘A Wrenching Nostalgia’ Official Lyric Video!
Who have been your greatest influences?
This is gonna sound corny as f***, but my friends are my biggest influence. Thank you for being you, friends. I am truly blessed.
What first got you into music?
I would have to say my mom. She is a big music lover and always made sure I was listening to cool shit at a young age. She gave me a Neurosis and a Tool album when I was 10 years old, and it changed my life. Also shout out to my cousins for taking me to see Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath when I was in sixth grade. Also shout out to Jack White from The White Stripes.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Aurora because I love her and she makes beautiful music. But for metal, a collab with Scott Carstairs from Fallujah would be mint.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
I think it would be really cool to play a non-metal festival, like Outside Lands, because I love San Francisco. It would also be incredibly hilarious.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
A hug.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Hey, you’re cute.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Johnny Cash.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
The best part is being able to create the music I want to create with the people that matter to me the most. The absolute WORST part is the pre-performance anxiety, that shit wrecks me.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
The inevitable control they have on you when you become popular.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
The Moon & Antarctica by Modest Mouse.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Although I am not a collector, I think the art form that comes with vinyl is pretty cool.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
New Year’s Winterfest in Vancouver! By far our biggest show and turnout.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I’d be gaming with Connor. And winning.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Jinkx Monsoon, Bob the Drag Queen, Katya, Trixie Mattel, and of course Mother Ru.
What’s next for the band?
EP 2 ‘Elemental Binding’ will be released on 2/23/23! And LP 1 is about 80% written.
What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Bandcamp / Facebook / Instagram
Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
I’m gonna go with a Bap cause it sounds funny.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks for having us!
