EMQ’s With NOMAD

Hi everyone, welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Canadian Groove Metal band, Nomad. Huge thanks to them for taking part.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

BAM: We are from the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, Canada. We’re about halfway between Vancouver and Calgary. The Western Canadian metal scene has so much talent in it, and we’ve been elated to see bands like Archspire and Unleash the Archers start to get worldwide success. I hope their success leads people to discover more of the awesome talent coming from our area.

What is your latest release?

JDM: Our first album “The Mountain” is on its way and the first single off the album, ‘Burning Alive’ is out now.

Who have been your greatest influences?

JDM: My grandfather, Dimebag Darryl, and Kirk Hammett.

BAM: Gene Hoglan, Flo Mounier, Brann Dailor, Jesse Beahler.

What first got you into music?

JDM: Probably my ears… Without them I wouldn’t have known music at all and probably never picked up a guitar.

BAM: I’d say I first started really caring about music watching ‘Much Music’ after school.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

JDM: Weird Al Yankovic… Fucking love that guy!

BAM: Ha! That would be awesome. I was going to say Devin Townsend, but Jeff might change my mind here.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

JDM: Amnesia Fest because it’s in Canada and I wouldn’t have to get a passport.

BAM: Wacken is THE festival everyone knows so it’s probably top of the list for the prestige, but there’s also Hellfest, Bloodstock, 70,000 Tons of Metal… I’d love to play as many as I can!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

JDM: A 12″ cold cut sub from Subway.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

JDM: I’ll be out back smoking a joint after the show, come join me.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

JDM: Cliff Burton.

BAM: Same.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

JDM: Creating music with other like-minded friends. These questionnaires…

BAM: Listening back to something and thinking “I made that.” I hate the cost of gear, man, copper prices shot up, so cymbals are even more expensive now. Ugh.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

JDM: Nickelback… They never should have formed.

BAM: Grammys… Either pay attention to the metal scene, or don’t bother.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

JDM: “Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues” – Strung Out.

BAM: “A Celebration of Guilt” – Arsis.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

JDM: CDs.

BAM: CDs.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

JDM: AMF.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

JDM: Just hanging out.

BAM: A backflip.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

JDM: Kendra Lust, Julia Ann, Brandi Love, Nadia Styles, Alanna Rea.

BAM: Who are those people Jeff?

What’s next for the band?

JDM: A few shows, couple of beers.

BAM: A few beers, couple of shows.

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

JDM: I don’t use social media at all!

BAM: Yeah yeah, I know Jeff.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct

name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a

Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

JDM: A cob and they’re great!

BAM: I dunno, I was too busy getting mugged the last time I was in London to notice.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

JDM: If you’re not first, you’re last. Shake and Bake!

BAM: I’m always adding A squared and B squared to get C squared. Gettin my pythagoras on.
