EMQ’s With Lost Dogs Of Ultimo
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Australian Alternative/ Experimental Avant-Garde band, Lost Dogs of Ultimo. Huge thanks to their Bass player, Pauli, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hi thanks for the invite! I’m Pauli and I play Bass Guitar and Guitar and write songs for the Lost Dogs of Ultimo.
How did you come up with your band name?
Ultimo is an inner city suburb of Sydney where I used to live and play with a lot of other musicians, artists, and activists and when we all moved out I thought it would be a good idea to initiate the project with a few of them and some new friends I’ve met on my travels, to collaborate on writing and recording some tracks in 2020.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
I am living in Melbourne, Australia and the live music scene here right now is going off with a bang with some of our local bands like WolfPack, The Stripp and SmallWays just killing it with their shows and supporting some of the bigger bands that are rolling through.
What is your latest release?
I have just released ‘Identity’, a song originally recorded by UK Punk band X-Ray Specs in the late 70s. I collaborated with Madam Nightingale, a Melbourne based artist, for this project.
Who have been your greatest influences?
I grew up in the UK and listened to some great music, both punk and rock. I always loved The Clash, The Buzzcocks and The MC5 and am really getting into Suicide and Alan Vega for the experimental sounds.
What first got you into music?
Seeing Slade in Manchester. Very loud and rocking band live!
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Melbourne artist Cloutie Will is an incredible vocalist and performer. She can sing anything from Hard Rock, Hip Hop, Jazz and Reggae. Very creative with lyrics and has a powerful stage presence.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
I’d probably like to get back to the UK. I have a lot of support for my music there, maybe a small stage at Glastonbury for a short punchy set.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Guitar tuner. I’m not sure if it was ironic or a generous gift.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Keep listening, I got a shitload of music on the way this year.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Kurt Cobain. It’s a sad story. I cannot imagine how much music he could have released. Incredible writing talent.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love being an independent artist, making music without the pressure of contractual delivery of product. I hate that streaming music is normal and that buying music is fading out. Artists can’t monetize in this format.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Probably have easier pathways for the younger emerging artists coming through, so they can be the most creative they can be instead of trying to navigate the rocky road of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Fugazi – “Red Medicine”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Vinyl.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Maxs in Sydney My first Band Bits Of Kids album (Taste This) launch night with The New Christs
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Guitar technician or Luthier building custom guitars.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Kurt Cobain, Buddy Holly, Amy Winehouse, Polystyrene (X-Ray Specs) and Barack Obama.
What’s next for the band?
I’m working on developing a project that incorporates our live show with a backdrop of Street Art, with a Street Artist guiding the audience for an interactive experience of creativity with materials supplied on the night.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
Bap.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Get out and support some local live music. Thanks!
