Quebec based solo curator Evillair returns with his blend of atmospheric black metal for new Nordicwinter release “This Mournful Dawn”.
Nordicwinter is a project that for me never puts a foot wrong and having been a fan of every single release beforehand, it was a given that I would want to snap this up.
The opening track ‘Enshrouded by Winter’ doesn’t disappoint. It’s a ten-minute delivery of cold, bleak atmospheric glory embedded with sprinkles of sorrow, which is then followed up by the equally woeful and highlight track ‘Death’s Pale Touch’.
‘As Twilight Fades’ only reaffirms everything that drew me to Nordicwinter in the first place. This track in particula I feel really encapsulates the aesthetic of the releases, already thirty minutes and as captivating as the album’s first few notes.
There is time for one more cold snap which is delivered via ‘Autumn’s Last Mournful Whisper’ before the instrumental conclusion ‘My Lament’ lingers off with its dominant piano laden delivery leaving the listener wanting one more emotive touch.
Lyrically and musically, this has been one of Nordicwinter’s strongest releases to date and I am already eagerly awaiting the next
