EMQ’s With Exilia

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Italian Nu Metal band, Exilia. Huge thanks to them for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

We are Exilia- Our journey commenced in the year 2000, ignited by Masha Mysmane’s vision to blend Metal, Punk, Goth and Pop into a distinct sound. Milan, the vibrant heart of Italy, serves as our home. We don’t fit neatly into one genre or label because we believe in the power of music to transcend boundaries.

How did you come up with your band name?

The name “Exilia” serendipitously emerged from a box in Masha’s room, captivating us with its intriguing sound. Beyond its auditory allure, Exilia encapsulates for us feminine attributes such as sensuality, elegance, and potent energy. The name also resonates with the notion of liberating ourselves from conventional norms, creating pathways to traverse diverse musical landscapes.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We hail from Milan, Italy. Unfortunately, we don’t have a thriving rock-metal scene here – just a few clubs and limited opportunities. Crafting this genre of music in our city is undoubtedly a challenging endeavour.

What is your latest release?

Our last release is titled “Heroes And Dust” – a long player with 12 songs.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Our inspirations are wide-ranging, encompassing artists such as Korn, Bjork, and Muse. This eclectic blend has played a pivotal role in shaping our unique musical identity.

What first got you into music?

We believe it’s something innate, an intrinsic part of who we are. It’s something that inevitably finds its way out, a force that drives us. During the toughest phases of our career, we found ourselves unable to resist the urge to create, to explore the depths of our musicality. It’s an unexplainable phenomenon; attempting to articulate it somehow diminishes its magic.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

A collaboration with an artist from a radically different genre and perspective would be immensely thrilling. Such a partnership could lead to a fusion of styles that boldly pushes our music’s boundaries. Collaborating with icons like Travis Barker or Rick Rubin would be an absolute dream.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Wacken, because it stands as one of the most influential festivals for alternative and metal music worldwide.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

A charming teddy bear! 🙂

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Stay pure, curate your own musical journey, and dare to break the rules. Learn to listen to your heart.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Chris Cornell.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

We adore the travels, the camaraderie, the vibrant energy of performance nights, the chaotic charm of dressing rooms, our fans’ unwavering support, and the pervasive creativity. What do we dislike? Music demands that we feel everything, and sometimes, it means carrying an abundance of pain in our hearts.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

We’d love to see more support and fair compensation for emerging independent musicians. The music industry can be tough to navigate, especially for newcomers, so more opportunities and recognition would be a positive change.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Korn – “The Serenity Of Suffer”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Bochum Total 2015.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Photographer, graphic designer… we hold a deep love for creativity, so pursuing a career along those lines would likely be our path.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Steve Jobs, Dimebag Darrel, Dave Grohl, Sharon Osbourne, Albert Einstein.

What’s next for the band?

Our latest album that we’re promoting live is “Heroes and Dust,” and they can listen to it on every digital platform. We’re also currently working on brand new music and preparing for our monumental 20th-anniversary celebration in 2024, commemorating our masterpiece “Unleashed.” This extraordinary event will include special collaborations and exciting new live dates.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

Let’s try with .. Bap 🙂

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you so much for having us! Music is the best!
