EMQ’s With JEHOVAH ON DEATH
EMQ’s With JEHOVAH ON DEATH
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Greek Occult Rockers, Jehovah On Death. Huge thanks to them for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Greetings Sinners, we are the inquisition, Jehovah On Death, an occult rock band based in Athens, Greece. Formed in 2020, we started working on material and released our first EP ‘Blood Madonna’ in 2022. The concept revolves around Spanish Catholicism and religion in general, which bleed into the music itself.
How did you come up with your band name?
The name ‘Jehovah On Death’ comes from a passage in Deuteronomy (32:41-43) where JHVH promises revenge and immense suffering on his opponents.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We are fortunate to have many amazing genre-defining bands, though mostly Extreme Metal. This aided our own pursuit, as we felt there is a vacancy for an Occult Rock band in the Greek scene.
What is your latest release?
‘Heart of Guilt’, our most recent EP has just been released to the masses, along with ‘Let Me Die (And Die of Love)’ from the same album. The album focuses predominantly on saintly ecstasies and punishing one’s self over the concept of “sin”. Additionally, ‘Heart of Guilt’ features a cover of Christian Death’s ‘Deathwish’ as this song perfectly conveys the aforementioned when in such a context.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Anything from Blue Öyster Cult to Rocky Erickson, as far as the music is concerned, as well as a lot of flamenco and traditional Spanish music. Lyrically, a lot of inspiration from the poetry of Federico García Lorca, Aleister Crowley, William Blake etc. is taken, as well as, some superb lyricists of the rock/metal scene. The two which primarily come to mind are Erik Danielsson of ‘Watain’ and Dani Filth from ‘Cradle of Filth’. A band we idolise, which to us is a perfect amalgamation of amazing Occult Rock music and poetry in motion, is ‘The Devil’s Blood’.
What first got you into music?
The need to create. Being the only species able to go against nature and natural order – time, even for a fleeting instant, through our art, is the ultimate blasphemy.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Like minded individuals.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Ask and ye shall receive! Should we be called to grace your local congregation, grace it we shall.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Naught, as of yet, however, tithing is always encouraged.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
To join our congregation. Our blood-stained hands are always open for the wayward flock.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Our fervent wish is to say the name Selim Lemouchi. However, we are sure he is content in the arms of chaos.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Spreading our hymns of ecstasy and torment is a most welcome experience, no wickedness involved.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Less emphasis on ego, more emphasis on art.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Satanic Mass” by Anton LaVey
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Parchment, organ and a choir.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
The inquisition, Jehovah On Death, has yet to grace the stage. We are setting the dates as we speak.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Sermons, Sacrament, extracting confessions through torment…
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
St. Gemma Galgani, for her ecstasies. St. Christina The Astonishing, for her rantings. The heads of St.Catherine of Siena and St.Denis of Paris and, finally, St.Bartholomew for the decor, skin draping and the like.
What’s next for the band?
The follow-up to ‘Heart of Guilt’ is being readied as we speak. More psalms and hymns are also being composed. We also plan to be gracing the studio this time next year.
What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, Bandcamp and other common platforms through which we can spread our message.
All our declarations, proclamations, and hymns can be found here:
Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
The inquisition, Jehovah On Death, does not partake in such sinful “delicacies”. Body and blood is enough for us, as well as that of sinners.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
-WORSHIP AND FORGET-
(And tithe the inquisition, Jehovah On Death, on Bandcamp getting your hands on ‘Heart of Guilt’ and ‘Blood Madonna’ in the process)
