EMQ’s With Yesterday’s Hero

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with USA Hard Rok/ Alt Metal band, Yesterday’s Hero. Huge thanks to their Vocalist, Chris Neller, and Guitarist, Tony Smith, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Chris Neller, vocalist. Tony Smith guitar. The band just started out as a group guys going through some things.

How did you come up with your band name?

(Tony) Honestly after writing several different names on a list we couldn’t decide on anything. One day we looked back at the list and saw it Yesterday’s Hero. We couldn’t remember who even came up with it, but we all agreed that it was it!!

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

(Chris) We are from the north, the western corner of Ohio in the USA. Our local scene has a lot of heavy bands. We are from a small town but 2hr or less drive to Detroit MI, Columbus Oh, Cleveland, Toledo, Ft Wayne IN. So, we actually see a lot of different scenes.

What is your latest release?

“Ways to Hate” LP drops 11-24!

Who have been your greatest influences?

(Chris) The Beatles I was obsessed with the Beatles for years.

(Tony) NIN – Pantera – Killswitch Engage and Chevelle.

What first got you into music?

(Chris) Singing in Church is where I found my voice and my father was a hobbyist musician. Music has always been in my life.

(Tony) My neighbour was a musician. I would sit outside his house and just listen to him play. When I was about 8 years old, he invited me in took me to a room of guitars and said pick one. From that generous moment, I was obsessed!!

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

(Chris) Brandon Boyd of Incubus.

(Tony) Light the Torch.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

(Chris) Glastonbury… does it even need to be explained that the crowd is hyped!

(Tony) Any Danny Wimmer production, Aftershock, louder than life, or close to home Sonic Temple. They are simple very well-run festivals.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

(Tony) The strangest was Chris gave me a picture of him singing. He was definitely a fan…of himself.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Live life your way not their way.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Dime!!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

(Tony) It’s the circle. When the circle is locked in and the music is just flowing its almost euphoric!

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Remove all streaming services. They should be platforms for the undiscovered artist that want to give away their music. The lack of income from album sales has led to the oversaturation of live music. Not to mention ridiculous ticket prices.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Chevelle “N.A.R.I.A.T.A.S”

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

(Tony) CD and it’s not even close.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

(Tony) Most people might list their largest attended or most notable venue. I’m not going there. The best gig for me was at a motorcycle clubhouse. It was Nathans’ birthday and the alcohol-induced set that occurred in that boxing ring will never be forgotten!!

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

(Chris) Driving a Big Rig.

(Tony) I build Hot Rods and race cars.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Noel Gallagher, Trent Reznor, Willie Nelson, Elon Musk, and Mike Tyson.

What’s next for the band?

Ways to Hate drops 11-24 Shortly after a video will be released for the single Bounce.

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

Honestly have no clue but hope it’s a Bun a Cob LOL! (Editor note: Sadly this isn’t an option – we just forgot a comma in the template! Another form of proof that punctuation makes all the difference!)

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for your time as well! We appreciate everyone who helps to get our music heard!!
