EMQ’s with Savage Blood

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with German Melodic Power Thrash Metal band, Savage Blood. Huge thanks to their Vocalist, Peter, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

I am Peter, the singer of Savage Blood. Marc, our drummer and I got the idea to become active again. In that year we played a concert with our former band Enola Gay. We had so much fun that we decided to do something together again. At the beginning of 2016 we had our lineup complete and recorded our first EP in the same year just to see what would happen. At that time we didn’t have a master plan but the thing was so well received that we could play about 30 shows. Our first gig was as support for Voivod. It followed shows with Doro, Burning Witches, Warrel Dane (RIP), Exciter and many more. That motivated us to keep going and we wanted to make the next album better. The result is now available with Downfall and we are very happy with it.

How did you come up with your band name?

There were two conditions for the naming of the band:

The term has to be free and the listener should be able to guess immediately what he can expect from the band name.

After a long time of searching and thinking I came across Savage Blood and was surprised that the name was still “available”.

Savage Blood fulfils these conditions.

For me Savage Blood stands for a non-domesticated form of living. Always ready to defend itself and preserve its art!

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are hailing from Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany. We have a lively metal scene here. Osnabrück is also home to bands like Hiraes (former Dawn of Disease), Fleshworks, Iron Walrus, and our label colleagues from Intöxicated, to name but a few. Most of the concerts take place at our Bastard Club.

What is your latest release?

It is our new album “Wheel Of Time”, which came out in November 2023 through MDD Records.

Who have been your greatest influences?

For me personally I have to mention bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, DIO and Black Sabbath. I grew up with the NWOBHM. Later the US bands were added to my list: Metallica, Megadeth,  Manowar and so on.

What first got you into music?

I grew up in a pub in the 70s. There was a music box with lots of rock and metal singles. Unusual for a pub, but they played all this great stuff like Iron Maiden, AC/DC and Black Sabbath. My siblings and I were also allowed to help decide which singles to put in there. That increased my interest in music. At some point I started drumming on things and then formed the first school band with friends. Because there was no singer, I also took over the microphone.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

There are so many great bands and musicians, it’s very difficult to decide.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Rock Harz and Keep It True, both in Germany. Not so big but very familiar with die hard Metal fans.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

No shit, I’ve never received anything from a fan as a gift. Attention and enthusiasm for your music is the best gift you can get as a musician.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Go to more concerts, listen to new ones consciously, maybe even two or three times and don’t skip around like crazy on Spotify. 😉

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

None, why? Everyone has their time and the musical output from their lifetime cannot be repeated anyway. It makes no sense to bring the dead back to life.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

The best things are live performances and good catering. What I don’t like is … I’ll be honest, interviews 😉

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I have no idea…

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Killers” – Iron Maiden.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl and CDs, Cassettes are funny but totally shit… lol.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I always have fond memories of our tour with Iced Earth and Nevermore at the end of the 90s. There were some good shows there, it was particularly cool in the sold-out Markthalle in Hamburg. With Savage Blood I would have to name two shows that were special: Supporting DORO and Clawfinger in front of several thousand people and of course our first gig with Savage Blood together with Voivod.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Dog Trainer, I have always loved and had dogs. We currently have two in our home.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

My wife, Heinz Strunk, Jan Böhmermann, Olli Schulz und Ina Müller.

What’s next for the band?

Play as many shows as possible and write new songs.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

Muffin, in Germany we know Egg McMuffin from McDonald.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you very much for your support. Stay healthy and best greetings to all your readers!
