Godeth. One of those rare occasions where I’ve seen a band perform live in the flesh prior to reviewing. This was way back in 2019, and since then, it’s fantastic to see the great strides the Leeds based quintet have taken. This includes acclaimed radio play on BBC Radio 1 and more, as well as a career high Bloodstock Open Air appearance on the acclaimed New Blood stage, after reigning triumphant in the Leeds regional Metal To The Masses initiative. Now, they are on the eve of their latest release, “The Path Of Destruction”.

Having seen the band perform live in 2019, it’s clear to me that Godeth have explored a new heavier style and steering away from their alternative rock foundations. Tracks such as ‘Test My Resolve’ have an undeniable hardcore stem, dripping with a raw and primitive angst much in the style of Hatebreed or Malevolence.

The old school metalcore influence is almost impossible to ignore, especially with guitar led anthems such as ‘Coup De Grace’ and ‘Cartilage’. With addictive riffs and melodies in the style of As I Lay Dying, this offers a wonderful throwback to this era which will have those who grew up in this era (like myself) purring with delightful. Speaking of delightful, check out the scorching lead guitar solo in ‘Solace’; you won’t regret it!

Vocally Miles is consistent with a strong mid-range growl. Though once section in ‘Coup De Grace’ made me a little uncomfortable, resembling the sound one would make when relieving oneself rather than the intended primitive growl.

Overall, the production values are reasonable especially with some heavy hitting drums and basslines popping into the mix. Though overall, I think things could be sharper, especially if the band wish to deliver on their promise of “The Path Of Destruction” being the EP to ‘ elevate the highly-rated quintet to the upper echelons of the UK scene’. Whilst this may not the breakthrough album yet, there certainly is a solid foundation for a promising Godeth to work from, and they have done justice for their brand here. It’ll be interesting to see some of these tracks performed at this year’s Slammer festival in Manchester this autumn (if you’ve not got your ticket, make sure you do).
