Bit of Brazilian Crossover Hardcore eh? Don’t mind if I do! Straight out the streets of Recife, ODIOSA have followed up some scorching EPs with warp speed full length ‘Selva De Pedra’; it might be 18 minutes long but there’s plenty to get your teeth into on these 13 tracks of ferocity.

‘System Imundo’ offers pacey D-Beat drumming and Suicidal Tendancies riffage with some serous swagger and attitude from vocalist Luísa Cunha who puts in a commanding performance throughout the album. The fiery delivery of the Portuguese tongue works fantastically for Hardcore vocals and adds a different spin to the standard angry jacked white dude with a frog in his throat approach. Having said that when the moment calls for raw aggression, such as on the Grindcore influenced ‘Alienados’ she is more than up to the challenge of shredding up her larynx with the best of them.

This sums up the band’s approach in many ways. I was expecting a fun if slightly one dimensional thrill ride when I checked out a couple of tracks and saw the brisk runtime, however this is a surprisingly diverse release that pulls from many subgenres and isn’t afraid to vary up the pace and show off the band’s musical prowess. ‘Repúdio’ is chock full of tempo changes, scintillating solos and a mixture of different vocal approaches, while ‘Francasso’ has some classic Thrash riffs that meld nicely with the more abrasive Boston-Hatdcore panic chords in the bridge. You get a lot of bang for your buck on this one.

Production-wise things are razor sharp allowing each musician to shine while still sounding raw and dirty enough to satisfy lo-fi loving shithouses like me. The guitar tone in particular is satisfyingly wiry and grimy, as opposed to putting all the emphasis on the power of the chug (which every dick and his dog does these days). The drums also sound chaotic and feral, devoid of polish and studio fuckery and capture a fantastic performance on the stool in its naked, savage glory.

If all the unsigned Hardcore bands I get sent were as fully formed and proficient in their songwriting as ODIOSA you’d definitely be seeing a lot more reviews of this type, but that just ain’t the case I’m afraid. Indie labels of the world listen up, ODIOSA are a Hardcore band that any one of you would be lucky to have grace your roster. Sign ‘em up!
