Reviewing music is great. It means I get to listen to all sorts of stuff and make new discoveries. I’m constantly learning what I like, and what I don’t even at the age I am now (old basically). And it’s lovely to watch bands grow from playing to a couple of people who probably haven’t even noticed they’re playing, into a solid performing outfit who can control a room. And this basically sums up Saur. A relatively new outfit, created a few years back by experienced musicians, and fronted by my favourite Red Coat of Metal – Adam Robinson! He’s such a sweet boy, who really does look like everyone’s favourite kids club supervisor. But it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to teach the kids any of the lyrics to the band’s songs! Saur have been kicking around the local circuit for a while, but haven’t put anything on record since their album in 2021.

So, what do Saur do? Well, the most straightforward description is Punk. If you liked the 80s Punk scene, then you’ll find Saur pleasing. But they chuck in some Deathy growls, and oodles of tongue in cheek humour and sarcasm to highlight the fact that they absolutely don’t take themselves too seriously. It’s like crossing The Sex Pistols with Lawnmower Deth and making them play Butlins!

The EP starts out with ‘Never Ever’. Opening with a nice guitar riff, and some sludgy panned Bass, this track is the slowest on the EP, and has, as always with Saur, the obligatory crowd participation element in the chorus – “If you don’t end up bellowing ‘FUCK YOU’ at the top of your lungs when listening to this, then are you even listening at all?” would be my question to anyone who wasn’t joining in here. It’s got a nice little guitar solo in the middle too.

Next up, we get to do a bit of ‘Skipping’ – this is my favourite track on the EP. It’s raucous and shouty, full of pace, and pummelling. Lyrically it’s another funny one. I won’t spoil it for you though. Go listen to it yourself! It’s in this song that we get the growls too, and they’re pretty brutal!

‘Unsolicited (Dick Pics)’ is up next, which is another favourite of mine, but more so for the lyrics, and, of course, the audience participation element! It’s a classic Punk floor filler about receiving unsolicited dick pics. I don’t really need to say any more about that one for you to get the idea! Go dust off your Cherry Red Doc Martens and pull out your extra hold hair spray for this one, cos you’re gonna need to look the part!

The EP ends with a cover of one of the most gentle and tender melodies ever written: ‘Hallelujah’. But of course, this is Saur, so expect it to be loud, brash, and in your face. It’s how Cat Stevens would have written if he’d lived on a diet of fried eggs and Thunderbird and pierced his own nostrils with a safety pin. Masterfully punked up, and, controversially, a little bit more banging than the original!

Solid show gentlemen! Thanks for making me smile today.
