Italy’s Wind Rose provide a solution to a problem that never existed and answer a question that nobody asked. That question being, what would happen if you created a Power Metal band dedicated to the Lord Of The Rings franchise, combined this with operatic vocals? Then logically, you’d call this dwarf metal… which raises further questions… what on earth is dwarf metal?! Not the kind of question that keeps you up at night but if you’re like me, you’re spurred on curiosity and must check out one of the fastest rising bands in the world right now! Giving their rising fan base across the globe and their headline world tour credentials, it sure is worth checking them out, especially on the eave of their latest effort, “Trollslayer”.
We have a cinematic style opening in ‘Of War And Sorrow’. Dramatic, the kind of music that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand. Then the explosion of energy that is ‘Army Of Stone’ kicks in. Honestly, you’ll find yourself bobbing your neck back and forth and tapping your hands and feet along to the pulsating rhythms. Much of what has been said there can be said about ‘Tales Of War’ too (or pretty much any song on this album), though there’s certainly more of a Celtic undertone being provided by the introduction of folk instruments.
Here, it’s easy to see why Wind Rose are becoming such a house hold brand and developing a huge reputation worldwide. Sure, the music feels a little cheesy at times. Isn’t that what you’d expect from a power metal band though? Sure, there’s more complex music out there, that are perhaps more challenging from a compositional point of view. Wind Rose are just immensely fun to listen to and a band you don’t need to take too seriously. This is definitely worth a listen to and rights of passage for any metal head.
