Hot off the heels of their album “Greetings from Suffocate City” earlier this year, Emo Rockers The Funeral Portrait have dropped a surprise 4-track EP, just because! It contains a new version of their song ‘Casanova (C’est La Vie)’, to celebrate their 10th Anniversary, as that was the song that really broke them, and became a fan favourite. It’s a great rework, which will definitely please fans.

‘Chernobyl’ is up next, which thunders in with a riff borrowed straight from the Neue Deutsche Harte movement, but with instrumentation and vocals that keep it firmly planted in all things Emo. It’s dark and foreboding, and I love it.

‘Hearse For Two’ is a ballad style, but still seriously heavy and Gothic. It cleverly intertwines well-known lyrics with original lyrics, and is delivered in Frontman Lee Jennings’ usual style, with a beautiful balance of tender vulnerability, and vocal power.

Closing the EP is ‘Dompamine’. As with some of the tracks in the Suffocate City album, this reminds me very much of Panic! At The Disco, in both its composition and delivery. Lee Jennings really does have a super voice that fits this style of music perfectly.

For fans old and new, this little EP makes a pleasing listen and a lovely surprise. And if you’ve not heard Funeral Portrait yet, but like Modern Rock, Emo, or Grunge, this EP would be a great place for you to test the water, as it succinctly displays what this band are all about.
