EMQ’s With KINGSFOIL

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with UK Alt Rockers, Kingsfoil. Huge thanks to their Vocalist/ Songwriter, Tim, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Tim and I am the lead singer and main songwriter for Kingsfoil. I formed this band in 2020, and despite a pandemic in the middle we’ve stuck the course to finally be releasing our debut EP just recently, supporting bands such as Giant Walker, Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy) and Gnome on our way.

How did you come up with your band name?

All founding members, but especially me, are Lord of the Rings fans. I turned to the legendarium for inspiration and we stumbled across Kingsfoil which is a lesser known, more common tongue name for a powerful healing plant often mistaken for a useless weed.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are UK-based, primarily in Bournemouth which has a fantastic Rock/Metal scene. It’s a small town but there are so many talented bands from down here, the most recent would be South of Salem and Thuum.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We just released our EP “In The Hands Of The King”. It features 4 songs and packs a real punch. Each track has its own flavour making the EP a really fun, diverse listen.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Across the band we have so many influences but speaking for myself I’d say Incubus, Alter Bridge, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Thin Lizzy…I could honestly list so many bands. Everything from pop to metal.

What first got you into music?

My family had a piano when I was little, but I couldn’t get near it due to older siblings so I asked my Dad for a guitar and I was hooked.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Nothing But Thieves would be awesome, or Myles Kennedy from Alter Bridge.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Hellfest. My favourite festival. There’s a home and a willing audience for all genres of music. Also the site is incredible – I imagine they look after the bands really really well. That’s the dream!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Two crates of red bull, passed over the fence during a garden solo gig as an offering to keep me playing long into the night!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

You guys are amazing – the noise you make at our shows and the enthusiasm with which you rock out and dance is unmatched. We will honour your support!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Jimi Hendrix. I’d love to see what he’d be doing with today’s tools. Such an innovator.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I enjoy being heard and well received (who doesn’t). I hate self-promoting. But it’s gotta be done. I just don’t always feel so comfortable with it.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I’d ensure more of the money made at the top went into supporting grassroots venues to provide comfortable and immersive spaces for up and coming bands. Too many venues are struggling to make ends meet and upkeep their hospitality quality to then entice new fans into venues. But there is money being made somewhere lining someone’s pockets. Music is being made in bedrooms instead of practice rooms which I think is losing some of the community.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Thriller” by Michael Jackson. Every song is an absolute banger.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl has something extra, like an artefact of music. However they are costly to produce. I’d say CDs should still be a thing, as they are a cheap and accessible way for bands to produce compilations to connect with their fans. But then Downloads are better for the fans I think. Portable and affordable. They don’t benefit the musicians so much. So I’m gonna say Cassettes for absolutely no reason. Bust out those pens and pencils for rewinding and fast forwarding.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Headlining our local Cellar Bar called Chaplins is immense. Intimate, lively and local. Everyone seems to enjoy themselves and it’s infectious. Other than that, supporting Gnome at a sellout show was immense. Thanks Choff and Untouchable Promotions (UMP)

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Wandering the streets lost and aimless, wondering where my purpose in life has gone. I’m a techie/developer outside of music.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Steven Tyler, Freddie Mercury, Dio, Jack Black, Andy Samberg

What’s next for the band?

A few gigs to cap the year in style: Worthing at the Charles Dickens for Hammerdown Promotions, the Railway Inn in Winchester with TOOTH, and a return Christmas gig the following night at the Four Horsemen in Bournemouth.

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll, or a Tea Cake?

Bap

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks to you for featuring us, and thanks to your readers for reading this far!
