EMQ – Saints Among Us
EMQ – Saints Among Us
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with UK Alt-Rock/ Cinematic band, Saints Among Us. Huge thanks to their Vocalist, Maddy, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Maddy, and I’m the vocalist for Saints Among Us. The band was formed by brothers Adam, who plays drums, and Brad, who plays guitar. I joined the band after meeting Adam in college, and Rahmaal, our bassist, joined us during university. Tom, also on guitar, completed the lineup later. Since then, we’ve been blending alternative rock and cinematic soundscapes to create something unique.
How did you come up with your band name?
Adam and Brad came up with it when they were like 14, proper teenage lads who thought they were being dead clever. They mashed together video games: Saints Row and The Wolf Among Us because it sounded well cool at the time—and somehow, it’s stuck ever since. Bit daft, but it’s ours now, so we’ve just learned to roll with it!
What Country/Region are you from, and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We’re based in Sheffield, UK, which has a rich history of music and a thriving rock scene. The community here is passionate and supportive, with plenty of venues like Corporation, Sidney & Matilda & Leadmill giving bands a platform.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Our latest single, Hunger, came out on November 15, 2024. It’s a deeply personal song inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, symbolising mending what’s broken in a beautiful way.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Bands like Spiritbox, Holding Absence, Architects, and Bring Me The Horizon inspire us. We also draw a lot from CHVRCHES’ electronic elements and the haunting atmosphere of Sleep Token.
What first got you into music?
I bonded with my dad over going to gigs when I was young, and that sparked my love for music. From there, it became my passion and my way of expressing myself.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?
Definitely Sleep Token. We’re all on a bit of a Sleep Token hype at the moment—except for Tom, who insists they’re just a metal Bastille
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Download Festival! It’s a bucket-list festival for any rock or metal band, and the energy of the crowd is unmatched.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
I wouldn’t say weird, but definitely the coolest was our logo hand-carved out. It’s now proudly displayed in our studio/ rehearsal space.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Thanks a ton for sticking with us. We wouldn’t be here without you lot, and you’re the reason we keep making music.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Mac Miller. His music was so raw and real, and it would have been incredible to see where he could have gone.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love writing music and connecting with other musicians. What I hate? The constant pressure to stand out in an oversaturated industry.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
The focus on numbers over artistry. Music should be about connection, not just algorithms.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Sam’s Town by The Killers.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?
Vinyl, hands down. The warmth of the sound and the physical connection to the music are unmatched.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Our single release show at Sidney & Matilda will always hold a special place in our hearts. The energy from the crowd was incredible.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I’d probably be working in the creative arts or maybe something completely different, like running my own cafe or getting into something like criminology.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
David Attenborough (so Brad can perfect his voice), Steve Irwin, Danny Devito, Bert Kreishner, Bob Marley. I feel like it would be an interesting mix.
What’s next for the band?
We’re supporting Skarlett Riot at Corporation in Sheffield on February 6, 2025, and we’re working on new music for 2025.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people? Please include any links.A. Everything’s on our Linktree: https://linktr.ee/Saintsamongusband, and you can find us on all socials as @saintsamongusband!
Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll, or a Tea Cake?
I’d say bread bun, but I’m ready for the backlash!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Just a massive thank you to everyone who supports live music. Keep coming to gigs and sharing the love!
