Here I am with a pile of albums to review! I picked up the live album from the crazy Italians named NanowaR of the Steel, “XX Years of Steel”, released in early December 2024. I guess that live albums are cool for two reasons: they attract new fans and please the die-hard fanbase.

NanowaR of Steel “XX Years of Steel” has a CD format for everyone – one for the curious ones (1 CD simple version); one for fans that already know NanowaR of the Steel and now are interested to take a step forward should purchase a 2CD version; and, for the die-hard lunatics fans there is a 3CD pack!!

Allow me to write my impression only of “XX Years of Steel” the 1 CD version because I don’t have time to review an album collection that is 2 hours and 30 minutes long!

I suppose that each Country has their own Geek Metal band. In the USA they have Steel Panther and in Brazil we have Negrayscow. Those bands take advantage of True Metal’s instrumentals and stage costumes that are so dated and exaggerated they are kind of hilarious! And, of course, let’s not forget Spinal Tap, the first band of the Geek Metal musical style – back in the 80’s, in the movie “Spinal Tap”.

NanowaR of Steel’s live album “XX Years of Steel” is something original containing unique and clever composition references everywhere, in a very fun approach, adding a great level of instrumental performance as well. In my opinion the band is sustained mostly by Power Metal and a little bit of Melodic Metal. Thanks to that foundation, NanowaR of Steel is able to explore several musical styles on each song.

The song ‘Odino &Valhalla’ sounds like NWOHM’s galloping style, mixed with operatics in on the chorus, and on the middle-section the song opens space to a goofy guitar solo then, suddenly, from out of nowhere the song develops to a soundscape to emulate ‘Another Brick in the Wall’ (Pink Floyd). You also can find infinite references throughout those songs which are kind of hard to describe: Ska Rock on ‘Sober’;  Melodic Metal on ‘Cacciatore della Notte’, Dance Music/Pop on ‘Dance Metal’, Rap on ‘RAG-Sody’. And the list goes on, and on, and on.

On ‘V per Vianneta’, and on the next four songs, Alessandro Del Vechio (Frontiers music maker) joins NanowaR of Steel to play solo guitar. Those five songs are sort of an aria and like Opera in general, but  Nanowar of Steel had a  brilliant idea by playing homage to Queen, especially on the part where Nanowar Of Steel mixes with the operatic part of the song “Bohemian Rhapsody”, with all due respect for the band Queen, I am sure.

Well, I could write forever about “XX Years of Steel” as I find other musical references each time I listen to the album, like AOR and even Reggae songs into the mix. And the live performance vibe is festive and entertaining.

ADVICE: “XX Years of Steel” may sound even better by drinking a bunch of beer, dancing and laughing and getting nuts with your mates. I almost faded away my 6 years of sobriety to get into the proper mood of the pagan party not give a fuck about how I’d wake up in the next day. But for me it is better to hang on sobriety than deal with a hangover once again!
