Italian Alt Rockers, Plasticdrop, have been around for 10 years, but in that time, have only released one EP, choosing to hone their live craft first. Now, after recently signing to Argonauta Records, they’re set to unleash their debut full-length on the world.
Opening with ‘I Want You To See Me’, Plasticdrop instantly establish the vibe of the album. It’s a pacey Indie/ Pop-punk/ Grunge banger, with catchy hooks and melodies that make you sit up and listen.
They head even further down the Grunge/ Punk rabbit hole in ‘Nothing For You’, with dirty, Stoner-like vocals, and plenty of fuzziness. But this is brought back to more general Alt Rock in ‘Simply Beautiful’, which pretty much lives up to its track name for a song in this genre. It’s starts out as more of a ballad, but gathers pace throughout, and has a sound that is best described as if Rod Stewart and Dave Grohl had a love child who grew up and became the frontman of Manic Street Preachers mixed with early Seether. I really like this track.
There’s some full-on Garage Stoner Rock in the mix, too. ‘Don’t Leave Me Now’ is a classic example of this, and is only missing a mother’s voice at the end shouting angrily from off to one side “Turn it down, the neighbours are complaining! You lot are going to be the death of me!!”
In seriousness though, this is a very accomplished album, and it shows that time and practice lead to good things. Musically, it’s tight as anything. Composition wise, the songs are well thought out, and a clever reflection of society. And in terms of playing, this trio are all damn fine musicians.
I’m loving the riff-heavy sound of each song, which is really well done, considering that there are only 3 musicians playing here. ‘Never Again’ illustrates this really well. It’s heavy and hard, and also has a smashing little guitar solo in, that keeps the Garage Rock feel very much alive. Talking about ‘Alive’ that’s the final track on the album and it’s a real foot-tapper.
This whole album kind of just makes me want to smile. It feels completely alive, borrowing sounds and techniques from the good old days, and reviving them into something fresh, and current.
If you like The Foo Fighters, or anything on the Rock/ Indie side that happened from the 90s onwards, you should really check out what Plasticdrop have on offer here. You won’t be disappointed.
