“A saddled horse only passes once”. Maybe it is not the correct way to write it considering I translated it from a Brazilian popular speech that old people (like me) often use to refer to when you shouldn’t lose a good opportunity in your life. When I saw the new album from these Canadian Thrashers, I immediately grabbed the album to review. You are probably thinking about the relationship between a saddled horse and my decision to grab this album. The answer is absolutely nothing! I just had no idea how to write this introduction and I did it in this way.
Jokes aside, of course there is a connection between my silly introduction with this new album. I was lucky enough to review all their previous albums and I absolutely know that a Hazzerd album always makes my job of reviewing very happy. I remember the first time I did it, with the album “Misleading Evil” (their first full album from 2017) and I wrote something like “It was enough hearing just the first 30 seconds of the opening song to know I was in front of one of the best albums of the year”.
This time, the funny video of ‘ThArSh TiLl DeTh’ was the first thing I heard, and the way the band is always evolving caught my attention again. It is like they keep all the anger of the brutal Thrash that they play, but not so angry all the time as before. The music has good melodies and harmonies to make it more enjoyable. By the way, my heart almost stopped when they broke the microwave at the end of the video. If they did it with an Air Fryer, they would make a great enemy, which is me!
Even though I’ve been focusing on the positive energy of the album, all the elements of Hazzerd Thrash Metal are still there. It is a masterclass of great riffs and an energy that makes you insanely bang your head. Maybe the difference comes with more addition of solos and harmonies than before. ‘Scars’, for me, is a good example of mixing fast Thrash with well-played solos from what we can call Classic Heavy Metal.
More tracks go deeper inside this Classic Heavy Metal, such as the 9-minute-long instrumental ‘A Fell Omen’. Again, this track is a masterclass of solos and riffs and it still surprises us by putting moments of calm and beautiful parts, like the intro, in a very good ‘Diamonds and Rust’ (Judas Priest Version) style. ‘Deathbringer’ is another example of this musical style, diluted over their music.
Of course you need to have great guitarists to offer this kind of creativity, also a good bass player to not sound hidden by the wall of guitars. Hazzerd have all of it. Congratulations for the band members. But it would be unfair not mention the ability of Dylan Westendorp, taking on vocal duties, and being an incredible and versatile drummer at the same time.
Maybe this chemistry among the four guys explains why they are so good at catching their fans on a first listen. If you are discovering this Canadian band just now, you can expect not only a high-quality Thrash Metal, inspired on the best of the style, but you will also be delighted with good technique through the Heavy Metal additions along the album. The result of all I’ve mentioned reflects why “3rd Dimension” is such an incredible album.
