EMQ’s With Mashaile
EMQ’s With Mashaile
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Bulgarian Death/ Thrash Metallers, Mashaile. Huge thanks to their Bassist, Angela Micheva, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Angela Milcheva and I play the Bass in Mashaile — a metal project from Sofia, Bulgaria. The band came together around our EP ‘Tales of the Cured’, which tells a dark story about a poisonous plant that lures people to their “happy” doom. The EP blends elements of Thrash and Death metal. Mashaile is a studio project, and I’m really happy and thankful to be part of it with very skilled musicians like Georgi I. Ivanov and Philip Kolarov, who both have a lot of experience in bands, studio work, and live shows.
How did you come up with your band name?
It came up during a random brainstorming session — the name ‘Mashaile’ was mostly my idea. It’s meant to be pronounced “Masheyl”, but people often come up with their own versions. Even my bandmates have their funny takes on it.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We’re from Bulgaria. The scene here isn’t huge, but it’s alive and growing, especially with more and more young bands emerging. The audience is loud and incredibly supportive.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Our EP: Mashaile – “Tales of the Cured”.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Some of the bands that shaped my taste in music are Death, Slayer, Gatecreeper, Cannibal Corpse Warbringer, Vektor, Gojira, and Dying Fetus. I’m drawn to aggressive, complex, and emotionally charged sounds.
What first got you into music?
I’ve always felt deeply connected to music. Even as a child, I was constantly singing and surrounding myself with music. I’ve always known music would have a permanent place in my life — maybe not as a career, but definitely as part of who I am.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Probably Gatecreeper. I really admire the way they combine heaviness with atmosphere.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Any proper Death Metal fest with a solid lineup.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Well… to receive weird gifts from fans, one must first have fans! I am still working on that part.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
My message to all Metal fans is: Never stop going to gigs. Live music is an irreplaceable experience — it creates a sense of connection that nothing else can match.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Chuck Schuldiner.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
What I love most is the freedom it brings — being able to express yourself in a way that feels truly yours. What I hate? The lack of time to go deeper.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I wish there was more focus on substance — on the quality of the music and the effort behind it — rather than just popularity.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“The Sound of Perseverance” by Death. A masterpiece in every sense.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs or Downloads?
They all have their charm. Downloads are the most practical nowadays, but nothing beats the feeling of holding a vinyl, CD, or cassette in your hands.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
As Mashaile doesn’t perform live, I can’t answer that one. But maybe one day…
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I’m actually more involved in journalism and language teaching — it ties to what I study and do for a living. Music is a passion, but not my profession.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
I’d actually love to invite animals instead — a dinner surrounded by cats and a Death Metal playlist — that’s my idea of a perfect evening.
What’s next for the band?
Time will tell.

There’s a long-standing food-based debate here in the UK. And we’d like your help. So… A Jaffa cake – is it a cake or a biscuit? Discuss!
It’s definitely a biscuit! I’ve never understood why so many biscuits are called cakes — it’s confusing.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Just a big thank you for the interest in our project — and to everyone reading: stay metal and keep supporting underground music!
