EMQ’s With Fatal Switch
EMQ’s With Fatal Switch
Hi Everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Canadian Hybrid Nu-Metal band, Fatal Switch. Huge thanks to their Vocalist, Steve Tobin, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
I’m Steve Tobin, vocalist and founding member of Fatal Switch. We’re a hybrid nu-metal band from Montreal that blends rap, metal, and raw emotional storytelling. The band formed after years of personal and musical evolution. We’ve released a concept album and are now building toward a multi-EP rollout that dives deep into themes of duality, defiance, and rebirth.
How did you come up with your band name?
It comes from the theme of duality, of nothing being what it seems to be. A “Fatal Switch” represents a sudden, irreversible change; something alters everything. It mirrors the emotional volatility in our music and the dualities we explore: pain and power, hope and rage.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We’re from Montreal, Canada. The Rock and Metal scene here is passionate and eclectic. It’s a city that embraces musical risk and energy, and we feed off that. We used to have one of the biggest music festivals in the world, sad to see it go, but the scene is still strong.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Our latest single is ‘Apex,’ the lead track from our upcoming EP “Black Sky Anthem: Dusk.” It’s an explosive, high-octane anthem written for the wrestling world but layered with metaphors of resilience and rebirth.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Rage Against The Machine, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Slipknot, but it also dives deeper with influences like A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Eminem, to Pink Floyd and beyond. We pull from a wide palette.
What first got you into music?
Music was always an escape and a weapon for me. It helped me navigate my identity, emotions, and the chaos of life. I was born with it in me.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Honestly, anyone who brings vision, inspiration, and grit. I’m open as long as they elevate the art.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Download Festival seems like it would be pretty fun!.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
A pair of socks with our logo on them… in neon pink. Just kidding, we don’t really get gifts.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Keep the fire in your heart and flip every fatal switch you find. Be the best version of you.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Chester Bennington. His voice and vulnerability meant everything to this genre.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love creating and connecting. I hate how much money and algorithmic noise it takes to be heard.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I’d level the playing field. Make it about the music again, not the marketing budget.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Autobiography of Kirk Jones” by Sticky Fingaz. Criminally underrated.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Vinyl for vibe. Streaming for reach.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Opening for Crazy Town. It was wild. Autographs, chaos, amazing crowd energy.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Running a label or producing. Music’s in my DNA.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Rick Rubin, Chester Bennington, Dave Chappelle, Joe Rogan, and you.
What’s next for the band?
New video for ‘B.R.E.A.K,’ the release of “Black Sky Anthem: Dusk”, followed by “Dawn”. We also have a feature with a major artist coming, and more crossover into wrestling and alternative culture.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll, or a Tea Cake?
Definitely a bun. Or a roll if I’m feeling proper.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks for supporting bands who are out here doing this independently. This is just the beginning for us. Let’s flip some switches.
