EMQ’s With NIGHT THIEVES
EMQ’s With NIGHT THIEVES
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with UK Alt-Metallers, Night Thieves. Huge thanks to their Bassist, Rick, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hi, I’m Rick and I play bass in Night Thieves. We got together around 2017 when Jess (vocals) and myself were looking to start a new project. In stepped Paul (guitar) with some huge riffs and catchy choruses which started to define our sound. Ryan (drums) joined in 2023 bringing massive beats to cement our sound.
How did you come up with your band name?
It took a surprisingly long time to settle on a name that we felt reflected the music and after a lot of back and forth we decided on Night Thieves.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We are all based in and around London, so a few of us in Hertfordshire and a few in Essex, but meet in the middle in London to practice. The London scene is great, so many amazing upcoming bands and there always something on!
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
We have just released our latest single ‘Obsidian’ which we feel is a perfect reflection of our sound right now. We have also just announced our debut album ‘Metaxis’ which will be released in spring next year.
Who have been your greatest influences?
We have so many and I think each band member would give a different answer but we all have some common influences such as Bring me the Horizon, Northlane, Incubus, Novelists and Deftones
What first got you into music?
My influences have come from so many areas, but I first got into heavy music through Metallica and then being introduced to more alternative and Nu metal styles such as Incubus and Linkin Park. I then discovered heavier bands like Architects and Periphery. I started playing bass after commandeering my dad’s bass and from there played everything from funk, to jazz and heavy metal.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
For me it’s Trent Reznor, it would be amazing to see how he produces his music and make some cool heavy songs with him! He would have so many amazing ideas!!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
There are so many amazing festivals but Download has to be up there as the one. Though Rock Am Ring would be a dream come true!!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
We’ve never had any weird gifts to be honest. We love speaking to fans at gigs and it’s just amazing to hear from people who listen to our music.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
That everyone is welcome at our gigs and we love to hear from you! Come down and have a chat with us!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
I think it would be Brent Hinds, it was so sad to hear of his passing and he was a musical genius! His songs and guitar solos are legendary.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love the feeling of sharing music with people and just being able to see people’s reactions to the new sounds we come up with and translating that to a live setting. There’s not much to hate about being in a band but there is a lot of time spent on admin and organising which can get tedious when you just want to play and talk about the music .
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I think it’s the promoters that take advantage of bands. There are so many great promoters that truly love music and do everything to make shows succeed, but there are a small few who do no promotion and take advantage of bands looking for gigs.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
That’s a hard one, tastes change so much over time but for the albums that never leave my regular rotation I’d have to go with Incubus – Make Yourself, Linkin Park – Meteora and Deftones – Saturday Night Wrist. Some many amazing tracks on these but they are also amazing as full bodies of work.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
For me I still collect CDs, having the full package of album artwork and notes along with the music adds to the experience for me. Though recently to save shelf space I have tended to only buy special ones or albums with exceptional artwork.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Probably playing Novacaine festival in October 2025, it was an amazing evening of bands and the crowd was insane!! Such great vibes all over the venue and met some amazing people and the organisers were great!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
We all have full time jobs but for spare time I think I’d be skateboarding more. Iv just got back into it and loving relearning tricks. I can’t imagine not playing music though!!
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
I think if we can have anyone, I would choose David Bowie, I’d love to hear about his career. Tony Hawk I bet would have awesome conversation, as would Keanu Reeves. I love to speak to Randy Blythe, I love Lamb of God and his memoir is a really insightful read. Finally I would have Tom Hardy, one of my favourite actors and would love to chat to him.
What’s next for the band?
We have our debut album ‘Metaxis’ due out in spring 2026, which we can’t wait to share with everyone!! We also have a number of festivals such as Hammerdown and Northants Rocks booked for 2026, they are going to be amazing! Look out for more announcements soon on our socials!

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
I’m from the north, so it’ll always be a barm! Chip barms are a lunchtime staple!!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Just to say thank you so much for interviewing us. We have so much exciting stuff coming up, so watch this space and we would love to see you at a gig soon!
