EMQ’s With My Dominion

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with German Melodic Death Metallers, My Dominion. Huge thanks to their Vocalist/ Guitarist, Martin, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Martin, and I am the singer and guitarist of the German Melodic Death Metal band “My Dominion”. Thank you for the opportunity to give you this interview. The band has now existed for 20 years and has remained true to the Melodic Death Metal style throughout this time. Even though there are no clean sung parts anymore. That is what distinguishes the new album “Extinction” from the first album “Consumed”.

How did you come up with your band name?

The band originally started out under the name “Force Fed”. However, at that time, there was also a French band with the same name, so we had to look for something new. As fans of the band “Grave”, at some point, we remembered the striking lyric “In my dominion, I control the weak” from the song ‘Soulless’. My Dominion seemed like a great name to us, so that is what we went with.

What Country / Region are you from, and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from Essen, a large city in western Germany. We are lucky that here in the Ruhr area there is a strong Metal scene with lots of concert venues, bands and fans. We have been fortunate to live in a great environment for our music.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

On 28 November 2025 we released our new album “Extinction”.
Already on 31 October the single for the title track was released along with a YouTube video.
Make sure to check it out.

Who have been your greatest influences?

The greatest musical influence on us was the Death Metal of the nineties and early 2000s. Bands like Hypocrisy, Six Feet Under, Bolt Thrower and Edge Of Sanity had a major impact on us.

What first got you into music?

In my parents’ home, there was always a lot of music playing. My father, in particular, would always have a Beatles, Moody Blues or Fleetwood Mac record on. That leaves its mark on you, even though at some point you naturally discover your “own” music. For me, that was Punk and Crossover at first, and later Metal.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

I would love to have Peter Tägtgren from Hypocrisy produce one of our records someday. He has produced so many albums that have had a major influence on me, so that would be a dream come true. At some point, he stopped producing records for other bands, but maybe he could make an exception for us. That would be awesome.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Most Metal bands dream of playing Wacken Open Air one day.
However, in this case, I would say Party.San Open Air, because that is where we belong musically.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I can’t remember us ever receiving a strange gift. Sorry for the boring answer.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Go to concerts. Put the phone down. Talk to each other. Have a good time. And if you like the band, buy a shirt or a patch. That way, you support bands of all sizes.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Without a doubt, that would be Dimebag Darrell from Pantera. One of the most insane guitarists ever. He could have written so many more great albums. It is a shame that he is no longer with us. I could say the same about Pete Steele, who also left us far too soon.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Even if it sounds a bit cheesy: The best thing for me is making the music I love together with my friends. Everything that happens beyond that is a welcome bonus. I am not a big fan of long car rides. There are definitely better things than racing down the highway for hours, but it is worth it to meet nice people and present your music. The time on stage and with the fans makes up for every inconvenience.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I would immediately stop AI-Music from happening. Music is not “content”, it´s art. People expressing themselves.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

It’s hard for me to pick just one, but I would go with “The Jester Race” by In Flames. The melodies on that album are simply to die for.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs or Downloads?

As a 90s kid, I grew up with CDs and cassettes, and I still like both formats. Nevertheless, I would choose vinyl. I just like the format and the fact that you really have to sit down and listen to the whole album in one go. That is how it should be. But to be completely honest, I also like streaming and the possibility of being able to listen to anything, anywhere, at any time.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

A few days ago, we celebrated our 20th anniversary in our hometown Essen, playing to a packed Turock live club. Everything went really well, and everyone just had a great time – it does not get any better than that. Apart from that, I also love the small gigs where you do not expect much from beforehand, that completely escalate. We have already had quite a few of those in our career, and I would not want to single out any specific one.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

When I went to school, I also enjoyed painting, but unfortunately, I have completely stopped doing that. I would definitely have to express myself creatively in some way.
Apart from that, I really enjoy watching series and movies or playing video games.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Apart from family and friends? I would love to meet Peter Tägtgren from Hypocrisy, Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse, the tour manager of Mötley Crüe from the 80s, Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin, and the comedian Will Ferrell.  I think they could all tell me some very interesting stories.

What’s next for the band?

We have a really workful time behind us and will now focus on promoting our Album “Extinction”. Besides that, we will play with In-Ear Monitoring in the future. In the next few days we will put together the rack and start rehearsing with this, for us, new technology. Prepare yourself for even tighter live performances.

There’s a long-standing food-based debate here in the UK. And we’d like your help. So… A Jaffa cake – is it a cake or a biscuit? Discuss!

It´s obviously a biscuit. End of debate. Thank me later. ☺

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks for supporting My Dominion. By the way, we have never played a gig in the UK, yet. Feel free to contact us. We would be more than happy to bring My Dominion to your dominion.
