EMQs With Pythonic

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Canadian Death/ Thrash band, Pythonic. Huge thanks to their Rhythm Guitarist/ Backing Vocalist, Vincent Kohut, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Vincent Kohut. I play rhythm guitar and do backing vocals for the band. I started this band back in 2015. Ryan Hunter, our lead guitar player, is the only other original member from that time. We acquired drummer Jayden Warriner in 2022, and his brother Morgan Warriner entered the band in early 2023 as bass. Morgan was later moved to lead vocals in 2025, and we acquired thundering bassman Max Hiske to hold down the low-end.

How did you come up with your band name?

The band name came from our original drummer. We decided on it about half an hour before we got on stage for the first time.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in Canada. The scene is doing very well here. A lot of the shows we have played locally this year have been quite full.

What is your latest release?

We are releasing an EP titled “Decomposition” on December 19th 2025. We have released two singles to support the release. ‘Guiltfeeder’, which was released on November 21st and ‘Liturgy’, which was released on December 5th. The EP features our new vocalist, Morgan Warriner, as well as Jayden Warriner on drums and Max Hiske on the bass.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Any time I want to make myself play guitar, I watch some live video of Death and see how amazing Chuck is, and it just makes me wanna rip. I also have a fondness for some of the big-guy guitar players, being a big guy myself. Scott Middleton from Cancer Bats, I love his chunky riffs and grooves. I have learnt a decent amount of Cancer Bats tunes. I grew up with them just coming on Much Music. I remember seeing the video for Deathsmarch and being like, these guys are sick! When I really started digging into them ‘100 Grand Canyon’ had to be my favourite track. I love that intro riff so much. Definitely like Mudvayne for a lot of the same reasons I stumbled onto them when they were releasing their self-titled in 2009. Greg has those same chunky style riffs. I remember hearing ‘Dig’ for the first time and just being blown away and also the bass playing, probably one of my favorite bass players as well.

What first got you into music?

My parents always listened to heavier music, so it just carried on through me. I remember being 5 years old, lying underneath my bed, listening to the “British Steel” cassette on my Fisher Price tape recorder. Around the same age, I also have a memory of listening to Rob Zombie in the basement while my dad was skinning beavers and muskrats for the hide to sell. The first time I ever played an instrument, though, would have been with my grandfather. He was showing me some chords and how to strum. Not long after, I started taking lessons.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I think collaborating with Sanguishuggabog to make a filthy track would be pretty sick. We got some of our new tracks that we have been working on that would definitely fit the style.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

We would love to play Wacken Open Air. We want to get over to Europe. We have had people tell us we would do very well over in Europe, and we would love to get over there to play some shows.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Outside a show we played in Edmonton in February, I had this dude come up to me and give me this piece of quartz. He said, “It kinda looks like there is some gold in there,” and that was it.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Just be you. If you feel you are working against a current in life, you could just be diverging from your authenticity. When you are doing what you need to be, your life will feel easier.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Present-day me, I would do anything to meet Chuck Shuldiner and just talk Metal philosophy with him. Late teens to early 20s would definitely be Dimebag. I was obsessed with him when I was 16. Earlier than that, I would say Layne Staley.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love playing live shows, that’s why I do it. When you see people moshing to the sick riffs, you have made it feel so worth it. My most hated part is probably recording tracks. I don’t really hate it that much, but I can get fairly perfectionist when I’m tracking, and it can get exhausting.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I would like to see more shows getting local openers for bigger bands; it would be cool.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Sunbather” by Deafheaven. It is one of my favorite chill-out albums, and it just slaps every time. If any of the guys in Deafheaven see this in the last three years, I’ve been in their top 0.05% of listeners twice just off this album.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl is king in my books, but it’s not very portable. I love enjoying full albums at a time when I am actively listening to music, so vinyls are the best for that. I prefer CDs in vehicles over downloaded songs. I find CDs to have better quality in a vehicle. Downloads or streaming is probably my most listened to option, just out of sheer ease of access.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

This year, it is a tie. Opening for 200 Stab Wounds was such a sick experience, and the guys in 200 are also just super sick dudes. Playing at Slaughterfest this year was also sick. We got to play on The Starlite Room main stage and to a very decent crowd by the end of the set. Playing in Pythonic just feels better on bigger stages.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I would probably be playing Magic: The Gathering even more than I already do. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to qualify for one of their regional tournaments, which was also a pretty cool experience. I have a very extensive collection, and I play the game online almost every day. It’s my next biggest addiction to playing guitar.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Andy Samburg, Jack Black, Seth Rogen, Ronnie James Dio, Bobby Lee.

What’s next for the band?

Working on more releases and working on more shows. We are constantly trying to play as much as we can, as well as balance out writing more songs and recording more songs. We are hoping to get some touring going in 2026.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

A roll.

Thank you for your time.
