Der Rote Milan are a German Black Metal band that, on their new EP, “Verlust”, have something else going on. Melodic passages bring another kind of perspective to “Verlust” and Black Metal as a whole.

The song, ‘Aus der Finsternis’ is a great example of my  impression on what’s going on musically during the audition of “Verlust”. ‘Aus der Finsternis’ begins with speed of light blastbeats and a hypnotic guitar riff, and the screaming vocals set things on a Second Wave Black Metal path. At the same time, the melody merges through the details of the composition (focus on the song’s guitar lines and you may understand what I am talking about).

The songs on “Verlust” navigates over that kind of sonority, mixed with drawn-out guitar riffs connected with the paced drum and bass conduction that goes lower and lower, until the end of the songs. On ‘Skepsis der Existenz’ the melodic parts are highlighted thanks to the guitar licks which find balance between melodic harmonies and the basic tremolo-picking technique that define most Black Metal songs.

“Verlust” is a very cohesive album, that is why it is hard to highlight only one song of the five. Some might say that all the songs sound alike, and maybe they do. For instance, on ‘Aus der Finsternis’ and on the next song, ‘Où allez-vous’, the composition lines are very similar, as if they are one long song. And that is fine, because cohesiveness is what “Verlust” is all about.

If you are up for Black Metal music, you will probably enjoy Der Roten Milan’s EP, “Verlust”. Adding some incarnated pieces of melody to Black Metal conventions may be an interesting solution to try something slightly more authentic and new.
