‘Redirect Revenge’. How does something so gentle and elegant at first morph into a dark malevolent beast so gradually? Honestly, listen to this and you’ll be lulled into a state of trance and relaxation before realising it’s a muse, with the distorted walls of sound slowly closing in on you. Mai’s vocals begin as ethereal and intriguing, before you witness her descend to insanity with a half spoken half growled monologue at the song’s mid-point. Former vocalist of The Ocean Loic makes an appearance which adds only to the unpredictability and chaos. Yeah, this song is full of curveballs and flows like lava; slow, marauding, and unsure of it’s final destination.
Well if you like huge distorted walls of industrial sound ala LLNN or Author and Punisher, then ‘ Preserve Manifest’ is one for you. You just have to endure a seemingly needless 3 minute build towards it which feels more like an advert break rather than tactically building tension. ‘All Contrast’ is better for that, with a less filler and more direct approach to injecting crushing atmosphere straight into your lugholes!
‘Dead Calls’ is the albums peak though. Fans of MOL or Deafheaven will be more than satiated here with a glorious blackened atmospheric onslaught that still retains that addictive melodic aesthetic. Light can escape the murky depths here.
Yeah, this is going to challenge you. It’ll be weird in parts but an undisputed champion in others. Endure some sections that will test your patience and you’ll be rewarded. 4 songs isn’t much of a commitment though and this is another left field of field signing from Pelagic Records that upholds the labels reputation.
