I always get excited to hear what new bands have to offer on their debut. I believe I was lucky enough to review many cases like that during these 9 years of writing, and also check what came next for them, after the first material. Most of the time, it is a reason to be proud seeing how these musicians evolve and gain experience. This time I got the Italian duo of Gorge to hear, without knowing they were debuting in this brutal world of extreme music, and the result is quite interesting.
The influences of extreme Death, maybe with a bit of Gore, is notorious on the guitar work and vocals. Don’t expect anything easy to digest here, except for a few moments when they slow down the rhythm, like in the song ‘Interlude’. This track even increases the dark atmosphere from the album with great guitar harmonies, also opening space for the next one ‘Unhinged Punishment’, which carries more of Old Thrash elements.
By the way, I had the impression that the interlude came to divide the album into two parts. The second part is as brutal, extreme and fast as the first one, but it looks like they choose more technical and cadenced riffs to this part, without letting the blast beat away, like ‘Fear Of Losing Another Vital Limb’. This one is quite interesting due to a short part of “dancing beats”. As a Brazilian, I couldn’t not enjoy the short sample of these drum parts but it is just a brief extra creativity for the song.
Talking about “beats”, the band uses programming drums and the creativity to compose it was amazing. They explore fast parts and the sound used for the snare drum is a bit higher than the rest. Sometimes it can sound tiring, but it definitely puts an extra spice of brutality on the arrangements. Overall, I enjoyed the “organic” sound coming from it, despite it being a digital drum, and I don’t think it decreases the album quality. Good luck for the upcoming drummer that will suffer to play it live.
Musically, Edoardo Nicoloso and Roberto Saa shares not only the guitar riffs and solos, but also the vocals, mixing guttural and that “pig noise” kind of scream that probably has a specific better way of call it, but this dumb writer just can think about the pigs singing. When they focus more into Death Metal, bands such as Suffocation and Dying Fetus pop ups in my mind as references.
The info about the band says “GORGE were created with one clear purpose: to bring back the true sound and attitude of ’90s brutal death metal; raw, crushing and without compromise” and that is exactly what you can find here. “Deeds of Horror” is a great example of this spirit and these Italians started kicking some serious asses!
