Anybody up for some skull-crushing violence? Not a sentence you hear very often. Then again, you don’t come across a band like France’s Profanation very often! In a nation producing many genre-pushing bands that challenge traditional boundaries of metal – like Alcest, Gojira, Year Of No Light – bands like Profanation take us back to the early 90s with their brand of no prisoners, no excuses style of crushing old-school death metal! No fancy digital amps or autotune, just raw aggressive death metal and tube amps, as it was once right at the beginning!
This is going to be as short as the mere 27 minutes this ‘full-length’ is. There’s not much to analyse. This really is as primitive and on the nose as it gets. Just riffs so dense they have their own gravitational pull, destined to cause unmitigated carnage in the live arena – and I’ll see this myself as I visit Tyrant Fest and Necropolis III in the upcoming months. Think Bolt Thrower mixed with Napalm Death. You probably get an idea of the punishing, relentless pace they conjure up here. As well as the piercing leads and screeching whammy sounds screeching above the walls of distortion (‘Anti’ being the best example of these). It’s not only relentless blast beats and unforgiving speed – though they’re very good at this. ‘Realm of the Absolute’ shows that they can slam down a groove and command unwavering authority in the process. Whilst ‘Total Stomp’ is as good a name for a song as any, given the way this will feel like a stomp on your face, or kick in the gut such is the slow and painful death-doom-inspired delivery. Yeah, be warned, this one flows like lava, consuming everything in its path!
To think this is the debut full-length as well is incredible! It builds on those solid death metal roots that their debut EP “Skull Crushing Violence” laid down whilst introducing a much cleaner and higher quality product. All without compromising on that raw, gritty feel and making this feel believable, muscular, and un-sanitised. Yeah, “Skull Crushing Violence” felt a bit too rough and ready, and demo-like. “Ultra-Noise Warfare” is the real deal!
Look, I’ll be straight. If you’re looking for no BS, balls-to-the-wall death metal, Profanation and “Ultra-Noise Warfare” are essential listening!
