Let’s write an album review for Ever Metal! This time around, I’m listening to a reissue of “Deep Inside” from cheeky Dutch weirdos 7Zuma7. Originally unleashed upon the land back in 1999, this slab of sonic sludge has been revived and reintroduced to our eager audio orifices by the very lovely people at Ripple Music.
So, what’s it all about? A healthy, bouncing Stoner Rock record with sleazy Rock’n’Roll in its DNA, that’s what. You’re not a million miles away from Kyuss on ‘Mirrorman’ and the saucy ‘One at a Time ’-and as lazy a comparison as that may be, it’s totally apt. The vocals of Nick Sanders even recall the great John Garcia. Elsewhere, ‘Over & Over & Over’ and ‘Fistful of Dolls’ add some Monster Magnet space rock swirl.
The head-nodding, psychedelic throb is ever present, but we occasionally veer off to other realms. 7Zuma7 have their ‘Planet Caravan’ moment on ‘Savanah’, but with oodles more raunch. Elsewhere, there’s super heavy, Grungy bombast on ‘Crawling’ that has an essence of early Soundgarden, and rollicking Rock’n’Roll on ‘Acid Manic’, complete with Stooges-style pounding keys.
With a fun but unnecessary cover of The Who’s ‘The Seeker’ tagged on the end, “Deep Inside” is a full package of by-the-numbers Stoner Rock. Whilst the Party Metal element isn’t too contrived or obvious, it does add a slightly different angle from the oft-overused drugs and muscle car motifs.
Although there’s little that strays from a well-worn Stoner path, 7Zuma7 are inventive enough to offer up a reliable and catchy album with “Deep Inside”. Who needs lobster and caviar when you’ve got the munchies? A big ol’ roulette wheel of pizza (with all the toppings) is just fine.
