I first happened across Temic when I was proofreading Oli Gonzalez’s review of their last album, “Terror Management Theory”. I thought it sounded up my street, so I gave it a spin, and within the first few bars I was hooked! So, when their new album landed in the EM inbox, I was absolutely having it!

For those who are yet to listen to Temic, they are an international Progressive Metal supergroup featuring current and former members of Devin Townsend, Mike Portnoy’s Shattered Fortress, Neal Morse Band, Haken, Shining and Maraton, with a sound that combines Dream Theater, Devin, and Leprous… So, yeah, all that I love and hold dear about music in one sentence there!

Honestly, “TMT” is still one of my most-played albums on Spotify, and there’s a 99% chance that if I’m in one of those moods where I don’t know what to listen to, it will be the album I put on by default. It’s a masterpiece in its own right, and I didn’t think Temic could get any better… Oh, what a fool I am.

“Ceiba” is a concept album about loss, in whatever form that may take, and holy hell, they’ve dialled it up another notch. This album has everything that any prog fan could dream of, from complex rhythmic passages to soaring vocals to stunning guitar work, and melodic and harmonic journeys that take you to a higher plane. And everything is shrouded in a melancholy that feels far away somehow. It’s indulgent in its simplicity. Its expansiveness is tender. Its heaviness is delicate, and intricate in a way that the first album wasn’t. This is an evolution of epic proportions into, in my opinion, one of the best Progressive acts you’re going to see for a long time.

Every track is just stunning, pure, and absolutely from deep within the souls of the musicians, and it connects like a hose of emotion to the listener. I can’t single out one track that sits above the rest, and I honestly don’t have enough words to describe just how impressive this album is, so I’m not even going to try (although I will say that ‘Broken’ moved me to tears).

Do yourself a favour, if you’re a Prog fan, listen to this album at the earliest possible opportunity – you will not regret it. If perfection is possible, this album is it, and unless something ludicrous happens, “Ceiba” is my album of the year, no question.
