EMQs with Prehistoric Animals
EMQs with Prehistoric Animals
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Swedish Alternative/ Progressive Rock band, Prehistoric Animals. Huge thanks to their drummer, Samuel Granath, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Samuel Granath and I’m the drummer in Prehistoric Animals, which is an alternative/progressive rock band from Sweden. The band started as a project with myself and Stefan Altzar (singer/guitarist) back in 2017. We made the first album “Consider it a Work of Art” (released in 2018) and then Noah Magnusson (bass) and Daniel Magdic (guitar) joined us and we became a “real band”
How did you come up with your band name?
Stefan came up with the name. I think it has to do with the style of music which is, I guess, pretty epic sounding at times and in some ways kind of “80s retro sounding”.
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We’re from the Borlänge/Falun/Örebro region of Sweden. There are some really great Progressive Rock bands from around here but the live scene is pretty tough. Fortunately we are getting gigs in Germany, Netherlands, Poland etc and will hopefully be playing even more live gigs in the future.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
We’re releasing our brand new album “Finding Love in Strange Places” on May 16th, which is super exciting!
Who have been your greatest influences?
Some of my personal greatest influences are Mew, Katatonia, Vola, Toto, Meshuggah, Steely Dan, etc.
What first got you into music?
My two older brothers and my older sister all played instruments when I grew up, and we had a drum kit at home so it kind of just happened.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Hmm, there are so many great musicians that I would love to play with. Very unlikely and very cool would be to get to play with Steve Lukather.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Progpower USA would be nice! Cruise to the edge seems sweet too!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Thank you for all of your support, for buying our albums and going to our gigs. You make it possible for us to keep creating music!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Jeff Porcaro (or Freddie Mercury).
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician?
I love to be able to make songs out of the rhythm/pattern ideas that I’m hearing in my head and to get to perform the songs with the band. I love going on tour with the guys, we’re always having such a great time and obviously playing concerts is always a great experience.
And what do you hate?
For some reason I really hate setting up and taking down the drum kit. I guess I should hire a drum technician!
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I guess it would be great if the streaming services paid us more.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Dead End Kings by Katatonia is one of my favourites.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
The main thing is that the music reaches the ears.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Hmm, a lot of fun gigs. One of the best was Progpower Europe!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I’m also a father and husband so I love to spend time with my family and travelling. If I wasn’t making music I hope I would have found another creative thing to do.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Conan O’Brien, Jordan Schlansky, Will Ferrell, my daughter and my wife.
What’s next for the band?
The release of our new album!
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and more.
Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?
Never heard of them before, but I’m looking at them now. They look delicious and we should put them on our rider. I’ll make a final judgement when I’ve tried them!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Yes! For those who haven’t listened to PreHistoric Animals yet, we’re on most platforms so give us a listen and visit us here https://prehistoricanimalsmusic.com/
Have a great day!!
