Hi everyone! Welcome to our new EMQ’s interview with Natal, Brazil based Death Metal band, Daimonos. Huge thanks to vocalist, Mirella Jambo, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hi! My name is Mirella Jambo and I am extreme metal vocalist. DAIMONOS is a death metal band influenced by slamming and groove metal, created in 2013. We are from Natal – RN, in North Eastern Brazil. The band was initially a quartet but since 2017 we have become a duo. We have three officially released full albums and two EP’s. We are Mirella Jambo, vocals and lyrics and Lucas Daniel, guitars, bass, drum programming and samples.

How did you come up with your band name?

We took it from a song by the band Behemoth that at the time of DAIMONOS’ formation, we used to cover songs to get closer musically, when we still didn’t have our own songs.

What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?

We are from Natal – RN – Brazil. The scene here is very difficult for us, due to the fact that there were few venues that, due to the pandemic, ended up closing. We also never had a financial return on the rare times we were asked to play, when we were a quartet. After we became a duo, it got even worse for us to be able to play live, due to the fact that there aren’t enough musicians around here who are able to play with us. Furthermore, very few people buy physical material and support us around here. It is another city that has many bands of different styles and almost no audience or support. Generally, people from other cities tend to value it a little more.

Who have been your greatest influences?

In life, I’m influenced by musicians from different styles that range from New Metal, Grunge, Hard Rock, to Death Metal, Black Metal etc. But as a vocalist in extreme metal, I admire Paul Kuhr, Angela Gossow, Simone Pluijmers, Onielar, Fernando Ribeiro, Cadaveria etc.

What first got you into music?

I always listened to a lot of classic rock and roll because of my parents. So, since I was a child I’ve been influenced by heavy metal even without knowing what it was really about. In my teens, when I started to understand the genres and what it really was, I started to listen to heavier things, alone, and I got to know the metal world more widely.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I would love to partner with Angela Gossow or Simone Pluijmers. They are women who have voices that really inspire me. We would also like to partner with Sepultura who are fans and who knows Kublai Khan or Cannibal Corpse if we can dream big.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Still about dreaming big? hahaha! It would be amazing to play on Wacken Open Air or Rock am Ring… there are so many! but these two are the ones I know most. Those festivals we grew up watching our idols play.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I don’t remember receiving a fan gift…Actually I don’t even know if we really have fans. I would find it weird to have a fan who would give me any gifts! Lol

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thank you so much for supporting us and believing in us. If you listen to us, it’s because you understand what we’re doing and that means we have something in common. It’s really cool when you know that you’re accepted by someone and that maybe you’re not thinking differently by yourself in the world. More content will come soon and I’m happy if you keep listening to us. This revolt unites us in a special way and only we can understand what it is about. It’s like a power, a sixth sense.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Kurt Cobain. I have a weird feeling for him. Sometimes it feels like I knew him and I’m sorry for his death. Your compositions make a lot of sense to me.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

What I like the most is the final result of the recordings and seeing how with each work we evolve more and are proud of what we did. What I hate most is the lack of opportunities and imagining that we won’t even make it halfway to where we might deserve.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

The sexualization of women. I know that many seek this and have as a goal, whether expressing themselves or simply being noticed. But I think this kind of thing gets in the way of people who don’t want to be seen like that. Mainly because we live in a totally sexist world and even in extreme metal, we are seen by many as figures and not as talent.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

My favourite three albums of all time may not be that heavy for some people but for me they mean a lot. “Fallen” – Evanescence, “Destroyer” – Kiss and “In Utero” – Nirvana.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

All these have their importance but I prefer CD’s. I don’t usually buy vinyl although I find the way that cover art becomes more valued totally magnificent, I don’t like cassettes but I understand the minds of collectors who value the most old-school climax. And the download is what we go after as soon as it is leaked on the internet or they put the sale on the digital platforms, however, I like having the CD in my hands and feeling that good feeling when I take mine

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I have a degree in gastronomy and marketing. Sometimes I work as a cook but now I see it’s not something I like to do out of obligation. I would like to work with animals or maybe children.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

I could invite some rock stars but I’ve heard that it’s better not to meet our idols so we won’t be disappointed. So, I would invite my husband and my four cats. Hahaha!

What’s next for the band?

A new album is scheduled for 2022. We’ve already announced it and if everything works out, it will be released next year. In fact, we already have the compositions recorded and finished, we just need to write the lyrics and fit the instrumental, so from there we can record the voice and mix.
