From the very depths of Colombian’s underground scene, the brutal Death Metal Barranquilla based band Cercenatory have just released their new album “GhoreSphere”, after a couple of years of hiatus since the release of their debut, “Swallowed by the Apocalypse”, in 2016.
In case you don’t know, the Colombian Metal scene is made of brave and loyal fans, a phenomenon that was shaped in the early 80’s, thanks to the “news from England” that The New Wave of British Heavy Metal was born. Since then, the Colombian Metal fans turned out to be Extreme Metal fans, just like the Brazilians and Argentineans. I believe that the fans in the rest of the world have read at least one interview with bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, among many others, saying that the wildest fans for whom they have ever performed were located in South American lands.
And I am sure that the Cercenatory’s band members were born and raised following the Brutal Metal local tradition, alongside bands like Cannibal Corpse and a bunch of other Death/Gore/Sludge-Splatter Metal bands from abroad.
I must say that “GhoreSphere” is an album that impressed me a lot! You see, I am not a big fan of Death/Gore Extreme Metal, but the lyrical thematic approach on the album combined with the ferocious and intimidating performance by Cercenatory are something to be noticed.
The album’s press release helps us to contextualize the mood ( or ‘mud’) of the album’s never ending nightmare landscapes, in verbis: “You scream in silence for the rising of the sun but the dreamtime has consumed you and the day will never come. You have slipped between the cracks of reality into an eternity of pain and madness.”
How could you possibly let go of an opportunity like that to deal with all the shit you have defecated into the Earth so far in order to feed decomposers creatures which are ready to swallow all your putrid guts and rotten flesh and bones while you are still alive?
I must mention that the superb vocal lines had touched me right in my liver and I couldn’t avoid immersing myself in all the putrefaction hidden on my pancreas while feeling a constant need to vomit all the pus and bile boiling on my guts. Yeah, that was what I felt listening to such songs like ‘Through The Deep Thoughts Of Tartarean Sadistic Cannibalism’ and many others with refined song titles like ‘Macabre Trepanation Orgy in Hell’s and ‘Abyss of Impaled Religious Incandescent Torches’. Lovely.
And, at last, I must mention the scarry and Sludgy drum signature delivered by the rhythmic section, highlighting the bass playing that emerges from the sewage swamp and increases the sensation of powerlessness while facing the apocalypse on songs like ‘Into The GoreSphere’, which are duly reinforced by austere and continuous riffs conduction, giving us the feeling of being in a maze in mangrove.
One thing is for sure: you’re not going to find any melody on “GhoreSphere” that soothes your heart chakra in search of hope and warm embraces that is going to help you to wake up from this nightmare deep down into the Sludge. Yet you may find joy in the middle of despair.
